NT Come Follow Me 45
Introduction:
Jesus Christ, “the Author of
Eternal Salvation”
What are you willing NOW to give up for the gospel of Jesus Christ? What are some false gods that we can give up? Are you able to give up cherished traditions for new and better revealed ways?
Hebrews 1:1–4 God had spoken by many prophets, but now He’d sent His Son. This was the purpose of the prophets. His is the message we must receive.
3:1–6 Jesus is the Owner and Builder, and as such, His is the glory.
7:23–28 Jesus is our Perfect High Priest, who made intercession for us all. Who lives forever, and we also will be resurrected through Him.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Promised Messiah for whom the Israelites had been waiting for centuries.
We can become converted by making Jesus Christ the center of our worship and our lives. We need to hold fast to truth, stay on the covenant path, and dismiss those things which distract us from Him.
Hebrews 5:9 “And being made perfect,
he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them
that obey him.”
Personal Study: Who wrote the Epistle to the Hebrews?
Paul most like wrote
the Hebrews, or was at least involved. We need to remember his audience was
different this time around.
Personal Study: Jesus Christ is “the express image” of
Heavenly Father.
Pay attention to Jesus
Christ’s titles, roles, attributes, and works that you find in Hebrews. What do
you learn about Jesus as our Savior? What do you learn about Heavenly Father?
“Jesus …
came to improve man’s view of God and to plead with them to love their Heavenly
Father as He has always and will always love them. … So feeding the hungry,
healing the sick, rebuking hypocrisy, pleading for faith—this was Christ
showing us the way of the Father” (Elder Holland, The Grandeur of God)
Personal Study: Jesus Christ suffered all things so that
He can understand and help me when I suffer.
Jesus knows our
debts. He knows are car problems. He knows our fears. He knows our sorrows. He
can offer us love, assistance, support, kindness, and mercy.
Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly
unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help
in time of need.”
God is approachable
and His grace is attainable. We need to seek for it and ask for it, so that we
can recognize it and feel it in our lives. We need to practice patience and
thanksgiving, daily.
Look up verses in
separate chapters (Hebrews 2:9–18; 4:12–16; 5:7–8) that show how your confidence can be strengthened that Jesus Christ will
help you with your mortal challenges. Acknowledge what He has done for you.
Mosiah 3:7–11 Jesus suffered for all of us, so that He could save and heal us.
Alma 7:11–13 Jesus suffered for our sins, our pains, our sicknesses and infirmities. He knows how to succor us, and He will raise us from the dead.
34 Amulek testifies that the word is in
Christ unto salvation—Unless an atonement is made, all mankind must perish
Personal Study: God’s blessings are available to those who
“harden not [their] hearts.”
We can be faithful.
We should not be like our ancestors of old and be denied blessings because we
choose to be unbelieving.
Numbers 14:1–12, 26–35 As these people needed to prepare to have the privilege of entering the promised land, we must prepare for the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In Hebrews 3-4 consider how Hebrews 3:7–19; 4:1–11 might apply to you. Record in the reading sections. Then respond to the following as well:
What can I do to develop a soft and contrite
heart?
Ether 4:15 Rend the veil of unbelief! Call upon the Father in Jesus’s name, with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. You will know that the Father remembers the covenant He made with your fathers.
Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the Lord. Lean on Him; look to Him. Acknowledge Him and thank Him. He’ll be with you and direct you.
Alma 5:14–15 Have you spiritually been born of God? Is His image in your countenance? Are you exercising faith in Him?
1 Nephi 2:16 Nephi had great desires to know the mysteries of God, so he cried unto Him, and Nephi was taught by Him and His faith increased.
15:6–11 We have been commanded to ask in faith. We need to trust in the Lord that He will answer us and give us the ability to grow in faith and be believing.
Jacob 1:7–8 It is important to accept Jesus as our Savior and invite others to believe in Him also.
Family Study: Jesus
Loves Righteousness
Hebrews 1:8–9 How can we learn to love
righteousness, too? What can you do to change from having unrighteous desires?
Family Study: Keep a
Firm Hold on Gospel Truths
Hebrews 2:1–4 Give heed to the things you’ve heard and learned and felt! Do not neglect so great a salvation! You have received gifts of the Spirit, signs and miracles.
How can we make certain that the things we have heard don’t
slip from us?
Family Study: Jesus
is the Captain of our Salvation
Hebrews 2:9–10 He has tasted death for
every person, both physically and spiritually. He was made perfect in
suffering, and He will raise us up even as He was raised up.
Family Study: We Must
Be Called By Someone Who has Authority
4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
