NT Come Follow Me 4

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 4

Introduction:

We Have Found the Messiah

John 1:39 We can all recognize and come to know the Savior, by accepting His invitation to “Come and See.”

John 1:50We read about Him in the scriptures. We hear His doctrine. We observe His way of living. We feel His Spirit. Along the way, we discover, as Nathanael did, that the Savior knows us and loves us and wants to prepare us to receive ‘greater things’.”

Personal Study: Who was John?

John was one of John the Baptist’s disciples before he became Jesus’s disciple. He was/is an apostle, he wrote the Gospel of John. He was the disciple whom Jesus loved John 13:2320:3. He wrote many other books of scripture. He is a translated being who still resides on the earth to bring souls to Christ Doctrine and Covenants 7:1–6.

Jesus Christ Chosen as Savior,”

Personal Study: Jesus Christ is the “true Light,” the Son of God.

verses 1–18 Truths about Jesus Christ that were taught by John (Joseph Smith Translation, John 1:1–19)

Why do you think that John began his Gospel with these truths? Consider writing your witness of Jesus Christ—what would you want to share? What experiences have helped you come to know and follow the Savior? Who might be blessed by hearing your testimony?”

Personal Study: Jesus Christ gives us “power to become” the sons and daughters of God.

John 1:11–13  Through the atonement of Jesus Christ and the ordinances of the gospel, we can again become sons and daughters of God.

Romans 8:14–18Mosiah 5:7–9Doctrine and Covenants 25:1.

“What does it mean to you to have “power to become” a daughter or son of God?

I think the power is in Jesus Christ and His atonement. So for me it means to have Faith in Jesus Christ, to love Him and trust Him enough to follow Him in a covenant relationship, by accepting the ordinances of the gospel and keeping the commandments of the Father.

Personal Study: The Father bears record of His Son.

John 1:18 No man has seen God, except He has born record of the Son. (John 1:18, footnote c)

God the Father was heard bearing record of the Son: Matthew 3:1717:53 Nephi 11:6–7Joseph Smith—History 1:17.

Christ is the Word of God—He created all things and was made flesh—John baptizes Jesus and testifies that He is the Lamb of God—John, Andrew, Simon, Philip, and Nathanael believe in Christ and follow Him.

If we believe in Christ, we should follow Him.

Vs 1-3 Jesus was with the Father from the beginning. He is the Firstborn of God and expressly like Him. He fulfilled His words with exactness, love, and honor; and He gave the glory to the Father.

He is true. His word is life. He created all things pertaining to our universe and us under the direction of His Father.

Vs 4-10 John the Baptist was sent ahead of Jesus to testify of His mission. Jesus is the Light of the World. He asks us to share in that light, and to bear witness of Him.

He asks us to also let our Light so shine before men, that they might see our good works (and through that be brought unto Him) and glorify our Father who is in Heaven.

He gives light and life to all that believe in Him.

Vs 11-13 How do we receive Jesus? We obey His commandments. We follow the will of the Father by exercising faith in the Son of God. We accept the ordinance of baptism and are born of God.

Vs 14 Jesus, the greatest of all, took upon Himself flesh and blood. His glory was manifest in our likeness, even as we were created in His likeness.

He is full of the grace and mercy and truth of His Father, even to the submission of His will. He understands our struggles, because He has endured them for each of us, while in the flesh. His atonement is real and infinite for all. And His arm is stretched out still.

Vs 15-17
John the Baptist said that Jesus brought the fulness of the law. He brought grace and truth unto our salvation.

Vs 18 Whenever man has seen God the Father, God has witness to man of His Son Jesus Christ.

Vs 22-28 John testified of Christ, and he baptized unto repentance. The baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost would come later for those who had faith in Jesus Christ.

Vs 29-34 John's testimony that he had baptized the Son of God, and that He knew that Jesus is the Son of God.

Vs 35-36 John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God. He was the Great and Last Sacrifice, sent by the Father, to save and redeem us.

Vs 37 Was this James and John, or Andrew and Philip? James and John were fisherman, and Jesus called them directly. I believe it was Andrew and John.

Vs 38-50 Jesus calls in disciples. They already have faith that His is the Messiah and a desire to follow Him.

Vs 51 Jesus testifies of his resurrection and of His glory.
