NT Come Follow Me 1
Introduction: We Are Responsible for Our Own Learning
John 1:38
What are you looking for, what seek ye, in your study this year?
Matthew 7:7
You will find what you are looking for.
Luke 18:22
Come, Follow Me; learn what you are still lacking, and make a better effort to
follow Him.
Personal Study: To truly learn from the Savior, I must accept
His invitation, “Come, follow me.”
Discipleship means giving our whole souls, our personal
will, to our Father and our Savior.
Our growth in discipleship comes from self-assessment, with the Spirit, to
determine what we need to do or what we need to change, and then do it.
Am I following the Savior? I’m I seeking to please my Heavenly Father?
Matthew 19:16–22; Luke 18:18–23 What lack I yet?
What role does
humility play in discipleship?
Matthew 18:1–5 You must become as a little child.
Luke 18:9–14 Self-righteous prays avail nothing. We need to praise the Lord more and judge our neighbors less.
John 13:1–15 Jesus humbled Himself and served the whole world. He atoned for us all. He washed His disciples’ feet, even the disciple that He knew was betraying Him.
Application is what is
important. As you learn about the Savior's life and teachings, apply what you
learn in your own life.
I am responsible for my
own learning.
Prepared to Obtain Every Needful Thing
Our homes are the best place to learn and apply the
teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Merry Miss Motto: I will bring the Light of the Gospel into my home.
Be active in your own learning. I believe I am doing that. Now I need to be active in ministering.
John 7:17
If we do the Father’s will, we will understand His doctrine.
1 Thessalonians
5:21 Hold onto your testimony. Never let go of the Iron Rod, or the
Lord Jesus Christ.
James 1:5–6, 22 Take the time to ask in faith, and take the time to listen and be patient.
James 2:17: You need to receive ordinances and minister for your faith to be alive.
1 Nephi 10:17–19 Everyone who diligently seeks the Lord can be taught and led by the power of the Holy Ghost.
2 Nephi 4:15 The scriptures contain those things that will feed our souls. They will be of great profit to those who study them.
Alma 32:27 Have enough faith to want to know and to want to follow. As you practice, it will grow.
Doctrine and Covenants 18:18 Formula is to ask our Heavenly Father in Jesus’s name, believing that we will receive; then will manifest to you the things that are expedient for you to know and do.
Doctrine and Covenants 58:26–28 Choose to go about doing good, like you know Jesus did. He is pleased with us when we take initiative and do good things.
Doctrine and Covenants 88:118 Seek to increase your faith and wisdom through study and faith in the good books that you read; also seek to help others increase their faith and wisdom through your teaching efforts.
I need to know the truth for myself.
Matthew 25:1–13 While there are those who appear to never lose faith, sometimes we all might.
Remember to keep your faith brightly shining, you need to trim your lamps constantly. Continue your personal scripture reading of The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ; and continue to study the Come, Follow Me material, reading the New Testament in both English and German this year.
Gaining and Nurturing
Testimonies
Luke 11:9–13 Our Heavenly Father wants to give us good gifts, if we just ask.
John 5:39 “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
John 7:14–17: Jesus taught His Father’s doctrine. We will not it’s true, if we live it.
Acts 17:10–12 All those who seek, of every walk of life, can be enlightened by the Holy Ghost and know the truth.
1 Corinthians 2:9–11 Through the Spirit, we can gain a hope of seeing the glory that God has prepared for the faithful.
What should I do when I have questions?
·
Seek understanding from God. God is
the source of all truth, and He reveals truth through the Holy Ghost, the
scriptures, and His prophets and apostles.
·
Act
in faith. If answers don’t come right away, trust that the Lord will
reveal answers when the time is right. In the meantime, keep living by the
truth you already know.
·
Keep
an eternal perspective. Try to see things as the Lord sees them,
not as the world does. View your questions in the context of our Heavenly
Father’s plan of salvation.
Family Study: The
Parable of the Sower Matthew 13:1–23
Vs 8 Have a softened heart, like good ground; ask for the Spirit to enlighten your understanding. Let the word take root in you.
Can the Spirit be
felt in your home?
Becoming Exemplary Latter-day Saints
What can we do to transform our home into a sanctuary of faith and a center of gospel learning? How can we help our children and grandchildren become excited about learning about our Savior?
Galatians 5:22–23 We need to be loving and patient and lead by example.
Philippians 4:8 We need to practice the admonition of Paul.
Look for doctrine. A doctrine is an eternal, unchanging truth. President Boyd K. Packer declared that “true doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior” (“Little Children,” Ensign, Nov. 1986, 17). As you and your family study the scriptures, look for truths that can help you to live more like the Savior.
