NT Come Follow Me 6

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 6

Introduction:

“The Spirit of the Lord Is upon Me”

Luke 4:1–21 The Savior resisted temptation by turning to the scriptures. You can do that too.
He has a divine mission to save us all.

The following section that I am copying from the lesson is interesting. As soon as Jesus was baptized and started His ministry, Satan came to tempt Him in an effort to destroy Him from His purpose. But He knew what His purpose was. He had just heard His Father speak to Him, “Thou art my Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”

We also need to look for our Father’s approval and validation that we are His children.

From His youth, Jesus seemed to be aware that He had a unique, sacred mission. But as Jesus prepared to begin His earthly ministry, the adversary sought to plant doubt in the Savior’s mind. “If thou be the Son of God,” Satan said (Luke 4:3, italics added). But the Savior had communed with His Father in Heaven. He knew the scriptures, and He knew who He was. To Him, Satan’s offer—“All this power will I give thee” (Luke 4:6)—was a hollow one, for the Savior’s lifelong preparation allowed Him to receive “the power of the Spirit” (Luke 4:14). So despite temptation, trials, and rejection, Jesus Christ never wavered from His appointed work: “I must preach the kingdom of God … for therefore am I sent” (Luke 4:43).”

Personal Study: Communing with God prepares me to serve Him.

Joseph Smith Translation, Matthew 4:1 Just like Jesus went into the wilderness to be with God, I can also find a solitary place to worship and ask for the Lord’s help in my ministry.

Personal Study: Jesus Christ set the example for me by resisting temptation.

Hebrews 4:15 Although Jesus is our Perfect High Priest, He was also tempted. He knows our struggles and how to help us.

Hebrews 2:18Alma 7:11–12 He has taken upon Himself the sins of us all, plus our sicknesses, our struggles, our weaknesses and our worries. He can and is desirous to help us.

What additional insights do you gain from the Joseph Smith Translation of Matthew 4? (see footnotes throughout Matthew 4).

1 Corinthians 10:13 God can provide a way for our escape.
Alma 13:28 If we are humble and prayerful, we won’t be tempted above what we can bear.
Moses 1:10–22 Moses had a similar experience to Jesus. He had been told he was a son of God, and He had beheld God’s glory; so, he rejected Satan’s attempt to have him worship Satan.

Temptation

Temptation is a test of a person’s ability to choose good instead of evil. “

Helaman 5:12

The Savior “suffered temptations but gave no heed unto them” (Doctrine and Covenants 20:22).

Personal Study: Jesus Christ is the prophesied Messiah.

Luke 4:18–19 Jesus quoted Isaiah to tell who He is:
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Isaiah 61:1–2

The Savior has invited you personally. How can you participate in His work?

Luke 4:21 declared, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

Are there things that might be preventing you for fully accepting Jesus as your personal Savior?

Luke 4:20–30 Why did the people not accept that Jesus was the Messiah? Mark 6:1–6

Mosiah 3:5–12

Video: “Jesus Declares He Is the Messiah”

Personal Study: As I trust in the Lord, He can help me reach my divine potential.

President Ezra Taft Benson taught, “Men and women who turn their lives over to God will discover that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can.”

Do I have faith to turn my life over to the Lord?

Matthew 4:19  also Luke 5:10 His disciples became Fishers of Men.

What is Jesus helping me to become? (see below in chapters)

How have you felt Him inviting you to follow Him?

Luke 5:11 How can you show the Lord that you are willing to forsake all things to follow Him?

Family Study: The Power of Fasting.

How can fasting strengthen my ability to worship and to serve the Lord?

Fasting and Fast Offerings

Isaiah 58:4 “Is it such a fast that I have chosen?

Isaiah 58:6–12

Isaiah 58:13-14 The Fast and the Sabbath Day have been set up for our own salvation.

Malachi 3:8–12 Do not rob God. As we obey and give of what we have, which will bless others, we ourselves will have the windows of heaven opened unto us.

What blessings have come to you as a result of fasting?

Family Study: Satan wants us to forget who we are and who Jesus is.

Matthew 4:3 How has Satan challenged you to stop believing in God or in your relationship to Him?

Lucifer’s goal is identity theft. He wanted to steal our Heavenly Father’s identity. He wanted Jesus to deny his own, and he worked to thwart Moses as well. We see this identity theft in our day all around us.

Moses 1:10–23. Why was Moses able to discern the truth? How did Jesus resist temptation? How can you resist temptation and the false information that is being perpetuated in our day?

Family Study: Jesus always thought of others: JST, Matthew 4:11

“After Jesus was physically and spiritually tested, His thoughts turned to the needs of John the Baptist, who was in prison:

“And now Jesus knew that John was cast into prison, and he sent angels, and, behold, they came and ministered unto him.”

How have you been blessed through service to others, even when you are physically and spiritually drained? How can we follow Jesus’s example to think more of others?

Family Study: The broken-hearted need help

How can you help the poor and needy? How can you help others Come unto Christ for healing and deliverance? How can we help those who need us on both sides of the veil?

Luke 4:18 I am so glad that Jesus was sent to deliver us all!

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised..”

Jesus fasts forty days and is tempted—He begins His ministry, calls disciples, and heals the sick.

Matthew 4:1–11

(Find your Word Press blog notes concerning the following questions.)

Jesus Christ

Me

What did Satan tempt Christ to do?

What does Satan tempt me to do?

He appeals to my physical weaknesses, my pride and vanity, and to my desire to be more noticed than others.

How did Christ prepare to resist temptation?

How can I prepare to resist temptation? Read my scriptures, and worship the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. Only worship and serve the true and living God. Fast with purpose, and show God your willingness to deny yourself and follow Him.

Vs 3-4
Satan appealed unto Jesus's physical need for food. He tempted Him to use power wrongfully so He could eat. Jesus resisted him with scripture.

Vs 5-7 Satan tempted Jesus to prove He was God's Son by doing something super showy, appealing to vanity. Jesus resisted Him with scripture.

Vs 8-10 Satan tempted him with riches and glory. Jesus told him to leave, and again quoted scripture and reaffirmed that He would only worship and serve God, His Father.

Vs 11 Because Jesus chose the right, He was blessed by ministering angels.

Matthew 4:18–22 What is Jesus helping me to become? (A true follower; one that immediately hearkens; at least, that is what He hopes for and expects from me.)

Vs 17-20 Jesus ministry begins. (John's ends for a time.) He calls Peter and Andrew, and they straightway follow Him.

Vs 21-22 James and John are also called and immediately follow Jesus.

Vs 23 The Gospel of Jesus Christ is one of love and deliverance, without money and without price.

Jesus fasts forty days and is tempted by the devil—Jesus announces His divine sonship in Nazareth and is rejected—He casts out a devil in Capernaum, heals Peter’s mother-in-law, and preaches and heals throughout Galilee.

Luke 4:1–13

Jesus Christ

Me

What did Satan tempt Christ to do?

What does Satan tempt me to do?

How did Christ prepare to resist temptation?

How can I prepare to resist temptation?

Vs 1-2
Luke has this correct. Jesus had been baptized; He was filled with the Spirit, and led by the Spirit into the wildnerdess or a solitary place to be with God.

After fasting 40 days, and enjoying the communication of the Holy Ghost and being taught by His Father, He was hungry.

Vs 3-13
Like Jesus we are tempted because of the weaknesses we experience: the desire for food, the desire for riches and honor, and the desire for ease and protection.

When we resist Satan, only worshiping the True and Living God, Satan will leave us for a season. But he comes back, because he wants to destroy us.

Jesus was always faithful, and because of that, the Father gave Him power to save us.

Vs 14-15
The power of God was with Jesus as He began His ministry. He taught with the Spirit and the people glorified Him. Can you imagine?

Luke 4:20–30 Why did the people not accept that Jesus was the Messiah?

They didn’t believe He was the Son of God, because they knew Joseph and Mary, and they thought He was Joseph’s Son. They couldn’t believe Someone So great could have lived right there among them.

Peter, the fisherman, is called to catch men—Jesus heals a leper—He forgives sins and heals a paralytic—Matthew is called—The sick need a physician—New wine must be put in new bottles.

Luke 5:1–11What is Jesus helping me to become?

Vs 3-10 Jesus called fisherman to be his disciples. I can learn from this reading, that even when I try things that don't seem to work, if Jesus asks me to try again, I should. I should also seek His help, because with Him all things are possible. He wants us to trust in Him.

Vs 11 When Jesus called His disciples, they forsook all (they gave up their professions), and followed Him.

Am I willing to give up the comfortalbe things I do each day to follow Him more steadily?

Vs 12-13 We we have faith to be healed, the Lord can and will heal us. Repentance and forgiveness is the greatest healing we can receive..

Vs 16 Jesus taught us to pray privately, and then God will reward us openly.

Vs 18-25 If we have faith even to be healed, the Lord will also forgive us of our sins. This is the greatest healing, because it frees us from being held back.

Vs 27-32 Jesus called Levi as a disciple. The Pharisees were critical of this. They were proud and haughty. The Lord is quick to forgive the humble, meek and repentant. He came to save though who believe on Him and repent.

Vs 33-35
