NT Come Follow Me 15 Easter Lesson
Come Follow Me Lesson 15 Easter
Introduction:
“O Grave, Where Is Thy
Victory?”
When people were celebrating the Passover, Jesus who is the Passover atoned for all the world. He died for us and rose the third day. 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Personal Study: Jesus Christ delivers me from sin and death,
strengthens me in my weaknesses, and comforts me in my trials.
Read about Easter week:
·
Sunday: Triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:6–11)
Hosanna to the Son of
David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna
in the highest.
(vs 9)
·
Monday: Cleansing the temple (Matthew 21:12–16)
My house shall be called
the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. (vs 14)
the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to
the Son of David. (vs 15)
·
Tuesday: Teaching in Jerusalem (Matthew 21–23)
Matthew 21
Jesus entered
Jerusalem on a young donkey as was prophesied. The people paved the way for him
with
their clothes. They waved palm fronds in the air and said Hosannah (Oh, save
us) and hailed
Him as their King.
He cleansed
the temple of the money changers.
He healed the
blind and the lame that were brought to Him.
The leaders
were annoyed that Jesus healed others and that the children said Hosanna and
called
Him the Son
of David.
Next day, he
cursed the fig tree.
Jesus taught
that if we have faith we can move mountains; He also said whatsoever we ask for
in
prayer will
be given us.
We need to
recognize for ourselves that Jesus Christ’s authority was given to Him by God
the
Father. If we
say we are His disciples, we need to do His works.
Parable of
two sons whose father asked them to work.
Parable of the wicked
husbandmen who slew the teachers, prophets, and even the Son of God.
Though Jesus
was rejected, He is the Chief Cornerstone.
The gospel
was taken from among them and given to the Gentiles.
Matthew 22
Parable of
the Wedding. Invited would not come, so the weak and the poor are invited.
8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding
is ready, but they which were bidden were
not worthy.
9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and
as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
Be prepared and wear the wedding garment.
All are
invited, but to be at the wedding celebration still requires meeting the Lord’s
criteria. Go
to the temple worthily. Partake of the sacrament worthily.
14 For
many are acalled, but few are bchosen.
We become
chosen by choosing Him and doing His will.
We need to
keep the laws of the lands in which we live, and we must keep the
laws of the
Lord.
The resurrection is true
and real, and whatsoever is sealed on earth shall be sealed in
heaven.
Vs 36-40 The
two greatest commandments. They cover everything else.
Jesus was the Lord of David, and in
mortality he also was on David’s lineage.
Matthew 23
Men should not set themselves above each
other. We are all brothers and sisters.
We shouldn’t teach one thing and do
another.
We should be
humble and teachable and serve one another.
Vs 13-36 Many
woes to the scribes, Pharisees and hypocrites. With pretense, they
make themselves appear
righteous, but they lead many away from the true gospel
of Jesus
Christ.
Jesus mourns
for Jerusalem and the calamities that will befall her because of wickedness.
They will see
Jesus again, when they believe in Him.
·
Wednesday: Continued teaching (Matthew 24–25)
Matthew 24
Jesus tells the
disciples the conditions of the last days before he comes again.
Many of the
things have been happening. “And this is the beginning of sorrows.”
Unfortunately,
there are many more
things that lay ahead, and Jesus’s disciples will be hated by the world. If we
endure to the
end, we’ll be saved. All nations must hear the gospel, and then the end shall
come.
Do missionary work. Gather Israel!
Make sure
that you always stand in holy places. Have the Spirit with you.
22 And
except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for
the
elect’s sake
those days shall
be shortened.
Beware of
false prophets
27 For
as the lightning cometh
out of the east, and shineth
even unto the west; so shall
also the
coming of the Son of man be.
Vs 30-31
Jesus will appear and we shall see Him. He will gather His elect.
44 Therefore
be ye also ready: for in
such an hour as ye think not the Son of
man cometh.
Matt 25
Vs 1-13 Parable of the 10 Virgins
Vs 14-30 The
parable of the talents.
Are you a
sheep or a goat?
How do you
feel about and treat your fellow man? This is how you treat and feel about the
Lord as
well. Learn
to love and serve as He does.
40 And
the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye
have done it unto one of
the least of
these my brethren, ye have
done it unto
me.
Thursday: The Passover and Christ’s
suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26)
Matthew 26
Vs 7-13 The kindness of the woman is typical of
womanhood. She had the sensitivity to know
what she
should do prior to Jesus's offering in Gethsamane and sacrifice on Calvary.
Some were
offended at the woman and by her using precious ointment on Jesus, because they
lacked
understanding.
Vs 14-16 Was Judas offended at being reproved or taught by the Lord?
Was he put out that the
woman was
praised and that the Lord set her forth as a righteous example. Whatever
happened,
Judas let
his small mishaps in judgment cloud his overall vision. Don't do that yourself
any more.
Judas had
already betrayed Him.
Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Passover.
This ordinance would be in memory of Him and in
covenant
with Him for this time forth.
Hymns are an
important part of worship, praise, and unity.
Vs 31-35 Jesus again tells that He will be taken, and
that the disciples will be scattered. They all
say they
won't deny Him. He'll meet them in Galilee after His resurrection.
Vs 35-45 Jesus suffered
alone for us in Gethsame. His disciples fell asleep. I'm sure they could not bear to watch. Angel
strenthened Jesus at some point. He prayed a few times in preparation for the
greatest
suffering there has ever been, the cumulative suffering of One for all.
Judas
betrayed Jesus with a kiss.
Jesus still
acted peaceably when men came to take Him by force.
The high
priest and others accused Jesus of blasphemy, because He declared that He was
who He is, the Son
of God. The purported to believe the scriptures, but they lived in corruption.
Peter denied
knowing Jesus. How can we more fully acknowledge knowing Him, like Peter went
on
to do?
·
Friday: Trial, Crucifixion, and burial (Matthew 27:1–61)
Jesus was so very shamefully
treated. He allowed it, because He loves us all. We all have added to
His suffering, and He took
upon Himself all our sins and infirmities because He loves us and wants
us to be free.
Learn to never use your
tongue to mock and ridicule. What was done to Jesus should never happen
to anyone, but we do it all
the time. We who know so little, sometimes think we are so wise.
As a mother who watched her
son dying, I can only imagine how Mary must have felt, knowing the
agony of her son and the
weight of His offering. Truly a sword pierced her own soul also.
I am thankful for those who
watched there with Him. I have a difficult time thinking about His
sacrifice and comprehending
what it means to me. Yet I am so very thankful.
Interesting words in the
scriptures came from those who wanted to secure the rock on the tomb so
Jesus couldn’t leave the
tomb: “so the last error shall be worse than the first.” One thing
I
most assuredly know is that
it is an error to compound our sins by trying to cover them up
and/or justify them. He
sacrificed Himself for us so that we can have our errors corrected
through faith in Him and
repentance through Him.
The greatest injustice that was ever done was that the most pure
and innocent person to ever live was wrongfully condemned and killed. Yet it is
our Just Father who called upon His Only Begotten Son to do just that for all
of us. Jesus atoned for many who are like Him, pure and innocent; and He atoned
for the vilest of sinners. Our Father and His Son are One in that they love us
all beyond our capacity to understand.
As a mother who watched her dying son leave this world, I can only imagine in a
small degree what Mary must have felt, knowing the agony of her Son and the
weight of His offering. Surely, a sword pierced her own soul also. And as that
mother whose own son has died, I am thankful for the role Mary played in
rearing the Savior of the World, and I am thankful that because of Him, my son
will also rise, just as Jesus did, along with me and all my family, and all of
you.
I am thankful that we can experience relief from the haunting suffering of our
sins and feel joy and peace, because our Lord is mighty to forgive. I am
thankful that the Father sent His Only Begotten Son, not to condemn us, but to
be our Way back to Heaven. I love Him and thank the Father for the precious
gift of His Son. For this very reason, Jesus was born, so that He could atone
for us, die for us, be resurrected, and give us the choice of following Him and
sharing in His glory.
Happy Good Friday!
Saturday: Christ’s body lies in the tomb (Matthew 27:62–66) while He ministers in the spirit
world (Doctrine and Covenants 138)
·
Saturday: Matthew 27:62–66 I wrote about this verses
at the end of yesterday’s reading.
Saturday was a day of darkness
on the earth, but in heaven it was a day of
rejoicing. Jesus ministered to
those in the Spirit World (Doctrine and Covenants 138).
The Saturday before Easter was a dark day for
Jesus’s disciples and across the world, as His body lay in the tomb. But it was
a day of brightness and hope for the righteous in heaven. The preaching of the
gospel in the world of spirits began with Jesus’s visit there, and the
righteous hosts were resurrected after Jesus Christ was, and given power and
authority to preach the gospel in the world of spirits. (See 1 Peter 3:18–20 and Peter 4:6;
also see Doctrine and Covenants 138.) This
great work continues in our day. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is available to all
people, both living and dead.
This is not new doctrine. It is the Lord’s doctrine.
·
Sunday: Jesus Christ’s Resurrection and appearance to His
disciples (Matthew 28:1–10)
The greatest event in history!
1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
2 And,
behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and
came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3 His countenance was
like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4 And
for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for
I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He
is not here: for he is risen,
as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 And
go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold,
he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
8 And
they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run
to bring his disciples word.
9 ¶ And as they went to tell his disciples,
behold, Jesus met
them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped
him.
10 Then
said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into
Galilee, and there shall they see me.
It was all right that they touched the resurrected Lord. (Mary just could not
hold Him there; He had to report to His Father first)

Holy Week:
Sunday: Hosanna”—a phrase meaning “save us.” Jesus
came to earth not to provide political deliverance but to save all
humankind from sin and death.
I am thankful for Palm Sunday and those who
recognized Jesus and their King, and those who wanted to, but did not yet
understand. I am looking forward to our own Palm Sunday, and I hope we are all
among those who recognize Him.
Monday: Jesus was angry to
see His Father’s house desecrated How do you act in the Lord’s house, in the
chapels and in the temple, especially the celestial room? Are your thoughts
clean? Are you focused on the Lord and His work? Are you free of malice? Do you
freely forgive others? Do you invite others to come unto Him? Do you think
about Heavenly things?
On Monday of Easter Week,
Jesus cleared the temple grounds. How do we act in our Father's house? Do we go
to our chapels and our temples and our places of worship in an attitude of
reverence, devotion, and worship; or, our thoughts and our actions still on our
worldly occupations? Do we rob others of their opportunity to be in communion
with God by exchanges that could wait for later? Are we seeking to clean our
inner vessels, so that we are ready for the inspiration the Lord wants to give
us. Do we recognize the Lord, like the children who cried in
the temple, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David.
Tuesday. Some of the
things that Jesus taught during the last week of His life are still the
greatest sermons today. It is wonderful that believers can still be taught by
the Master Teacher.
What are some of your favorite parables as found Matthew chapters 21-25? Why
are the important to you?
Wednesday. Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love:
“Thou
shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like
unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” —Matthew 22:37–39
Thursday. Matthew 26:36–57
Luke 22:14–20, 39-54
41 And
he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 Saying, Father, if
thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not
my will, but thine, be done.
43 And there appeared
an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
44 And being in
an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it
were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 And when he rose up
from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
Vs 52-54 Often rulers who do evil deeds do them at night when
good people are not aware or available to stop them.

On Passover Thursday, before
Crucifixion Friday, Jesus met in an upper room with His disciples to observe
the Passover, and also to institute the Sacrament. At the Lord’s Supper, He
washed all of His Apostle’s feet, even the one He knew would betray Him. There
is love in that; there is comfort in that; there is hope in that. He loves each
of us and continues to offer us everything, if we come unto Him, believe in
Him, have faith in Him, and do what He asks us to do.
The sacrament is an opportunity for us to renew sacred covenant with the Lord,
to recommit to always remember Him, and to have His promise that we can always
have His Spirit to be with us. We can find renewal and cleansing through
observing the Sabbath day and partaking of the Sacrament.
Jesus’s Apostles received the emblems of His body and His blood, right before
He offered Himself up a sacrifice for all our sins. This they were to observe
to do in remembrance of Him and of what was about to do, what He has done for
all of us.
Later that evening,Jesus suffered alone for us in Gethsame. His
disciples fell asleep. I'm sure they could not bear to watch. An angel strengthened
Jesus at some point. He prayed a few times in preparation for the greatest
suffering there has ever been, the cumulative suffering of One for all.
I love Him. I thank Him. My heart swells with gratitude for what He has done
for me, a sinner.

“A new commandment
I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you. … By this shall
all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John
13:34–35) . When we have love for one another, it’s easier to be like
Jesus—we’re more patient, forgiving, and compassionate with the people around
us.
John 15:9–12
Friday:
After a series of one-sided trials, Jesus Christ was sentenced to death by
crucifixion. Roman soldiers mocked and scourged Him and nailed Him to the
cross. But instead of condemning them, Jesus Christ begged His Father to
“forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Even in His darkest
moment, Jesus spoke of love and redemption. With His dying breath, Jesus
addressed His Father. “It is finished,” He said (John 19:30). An unlikely
testimony came from a Roman centurion and those who were with
him: “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54). The realization
is just as awe-inspiring today as it was then.
We cannot wash our hands or wash away our guilt when we allow
others to be condemned wrongfully.
Saturday:
“His death. The night before, His body had been
lovingly prepared and placed in a garden tomb. Now they were left to
figure out how life could possibly go on without Him. Almost certainly His
death had taken something from them, but what they had lost was nothing
compared to all that His life had given. Whether they understood it or not,
Jesus Christ had forged a new path forward for all who would follow Him, one
lit by a hope that shines brighter than any darkness we may encounter.”
John
14:15–16, 26–27 After His resurrection, the Gift of
the Holy Ghost was given. The Holy Ghost can comfort all of us who seek
comfort. We have the promised from Jesus that He will not leave us comfortless.
Matthew
27:55–61 On Saturday, Jesus’s body lay in the tomb.
Sunday:
“Early in the morning,
Mary Magdalene, a friend and follower of Jesus, came to the tomb to care for
Jesus Christ’s body. To her astonishment, she found the tomb empty. Later, as
she wept outside the tomb, a man addressed her—a gardener, she supposed. But
then He said her name: “Mary.” And she saw. It was Jesus Christ, alive
again. The knowledge was too wonderful to contain. Her faith propelled her into
a joyous sprint as she ran to tell the others.
“It’s a testimony that
still propels people today. You can know just as she did that Jesus Christ
lives. Because of Him, everyone will live again. If we follow Christ, we can
find true happiness on earth—and look forward to eternal joy in the life to
come.”
John 20:1–18
1 The first day of the week cometh Mary
Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth
the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
2 Then she runneth,
and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved,
and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the
sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.
3 Peter therefore
went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
4 So they ran both
together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the
sepulchre.
5 And he stooping
down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not
in.
6 Then cometh Simon
Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes
lie,
7 And
the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but
wrapped together in a place by itself.
8 Then went in also
that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and
believed.
9 For as yet they
knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
10 Then the disciples
went away again unto their own home.
11 But Mary stood
without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and
looked into the sepulchre,
12 And seeth
two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at
the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
13 And they say unto
her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away
my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
14 And when she had
thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew
not that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus saith unto
her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the
gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou
hast laid him, and I will take him away.
16 Jesus saith unto
her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to
say, Master.
17 Jesus saith unto
her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father:
but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and
your Father; and to my God, and your God.
18 Mary
Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord,
and that he had spoken these things unto her.
20 But
now is Christ risen from the dead, and become
the firstfruits of them that slept.
21 For since by
man came death, by man came also
the resurrection of the dead.
22 For
as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be
made alive.

Today we are celebrating the greatest event in all history!
Jesus Christ rose from the dead! The Man that performed so many miracles and
did so much good, was given power over death, not just for Himself but for all
of us. He Lives!
(See John 20:1-18; also 1 Corinthians 15:20–22)
Personal Study: Many witnesses testify of the Resurrection of
Jesus Christ.
The apostles and disciples of Jesus Christ must have sorrowed to see people mock, scourge, and crucify the Lord and work to end His mission. I think we must feel similar to them when those we love forsake Jesus and openly ridicule all things religious. Witnessing his death must have been so painful, put they became witnesses to His life and mission, his Atonement and Resurrection.
Accounts of those who
witnessed the Resurrected Savior:
Matthew 28:1–10; Luke 24:13–35; John 20:19–29; and 1 Corinthians
15:1–8, 55.
3 Nephi 11; Mormon 1:15; Ether 12:38–39; Doctrine and
Covenants 76:19–24; 110:1–10; Joseph Smith—History
1:15–17.

How does your faith in the Savior and the promise of resurrection influence the
way you live?

“Blessed Are They That Have Not Seen, and Yet Have Believed”
Heavenly Father
introduced His Son:
7 Behold
my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,
in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him.
Vs 8-17 Jesus appeared to
the Nephite and Lamanite people. He witnessed that He had atoned for the world
as the prophets foretold. The people remembered that they had been told He
would visit them. They all saw the Lord and greeted Him one by one, feeling the
wounds in His hands and feet and side. They knew Jesus was their Messiah. They did cry out with one accord, saying:
17 Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God! And they did fall
down at the feet of Jesus, and did worship him.
Vs 21-28 Jesus ordained
Nephi and others to baptize the people. All those who repented could be
baptized.
Vs 28-30 We are not to argue over the manner of ordinances
in the Lord's Church. He has given men power and authority to baptize and
minister in His Church, and he wants no contention over the points of His
doctrine.
Vs 31-36 The Lord tells us
the Doctrine of Christ, which encompasses Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,
repentance, baptism by immersion for the remission ofsins, and the laying on of
hands for the gift of the Holy Ghos; after that comes enduring in faith on His
name to the end and been given eternal life in his presence.
Vs 32, 35-36 The Father,
the Son, and the Holy Ghost are all one. They bear record of each other. The
Holy Ghost can bear record to us of the truth of these words, the doctrine of
Christ; and that God is our Father and Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer.
Vs 37-41 All must be called
to repentance. Those who do repent and are baptized will ahve the gift of
eternal life.
Personal Study: Jesus Christ gives me hope and joy.
1 Peter 1:3–11 I have hope in Jesus and the resurrection that He will provide for me. I know that even the troubles and tribulations can work together for me good, if I hold true to Him as He also held true to His Father. An eternal inheritance with Him and with my loves ones will be well worth the cost of momentary discomforts.

Alma 27:28 The Ammonites, the repentant Lamanites, found great hope and joy in the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
36:1–24: Faith in Jesus Christ leads to forgiveness; and forgiveness leads us to a desire to testify of Him.

Jesus is Jehovah; He is the Messiah; He is the
Creator of the Earth (the foreman); He was baptized; He did good works; He
healed the sick and cast out devils; He was despised for doing good; His gospel
is a message of peace and goodwill; He bids us to follow Him; He healed the
sick, gave sight t the blind and mobility to the lame, and raised the dead; He
taught Heavenly Father’s Plan of Salvation; He atoned for us and instituted the
sacrament for us to remember Him and covenant with Him; He willingly suffered
and died for all of us, to save us from sin and death. His life is Eternal; He
is the Firstborn and Only Begotten of the Father; He is our Redeemer. Jesus was
the first to rise in the Resurrection; He visited His disciples after His
resurrection; He visited His other sheep throughout the world; He and His
Father visited the by Joseph, who became the prophet of the dispensation of the
fullness of times, which brought about the work of the gathering.
Joseph Smith described His glory. Jesus told Him, “I am the first and the last;
I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father.”
D&C 110:3–4
D&C 76:22–24 Joseph and Sidney saw Him
in vision. “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him,
this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!
“For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the
voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—
“That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were
created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.”
His Church has been restored to the earth, with Priesthood power,
prophets and apostles, and Jesus Himself leading the Church. He will come to
earth again; all of us will witness of it; He told us He come again. Prepare,
the day is soon.
“He will rule as King of Kings and
reign as Lord of Lords, and every knee shall bend and every tongue shall speak
in worship before Him. Each of us will stand to be judged of Him according to
our works and the desires of our hearts.”
“We bear testimony, as His duly ordained
Apostles—that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God. He is the
great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is
the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads
to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come. God be thanked
for the matchless gift of His divine Son.”
