NT Come Follow Me 19
Introduction:
“Rejoice with Me; for I Have
Found My Sheep Which Was Lost”
The Good Shepherd
wants more than 99%. He has always cared about the one. He cares about you!
Doctrine and Covenants 18:10 The worth of souls
Luke 15:4 Great rejoicing over the sheep that was lost and is found.
Luke 15:7 “joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that
repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no
repentance.”
If that seems unfair,
it’s helpful to remember that, in truth, there are none who “need no
repentance.” We all need rescuing. And we all can participate in the rescue,
rejoicing together over every soul who is saved (see Doctrine and
Covenants 18:15–16).
Personal Study: As I live the truths taught by Jesus Christ,
I will come to know they are true.
How can I lift my
sights beyond worldly things to the things of the Lord? What would He have me
change? What would He have me do?
Notes from the parables listed in this section will be in the scripture
readings.
Matthew 6:19–34 Put the kingdom of God first. Christ certainly has put you first.
2 Nephi 9:30 Don’t make earthly treasures your God.
Doctrine and
Covenants 25:10 And verily I say unto thee that thou shalt lay aside
the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better.
Personal Study: Heavenly Father rejoices when those who are
lost are found.
Luke 15 How does Heavenly Father feel about those who have sinned or are otherwise lost?
How should the Bishop feel towards that person? How do I
feel?
After watching Jesus Revolution, I think we should all be loving, welcoming,
non-judgmental and inviting. Everyone should be welcomed and made to feel at
home.
Luke 15:1–2
The Pharisees and Publicans judged Jesus for associating with sinners.
Pay attention to what Jesus teaches us in this chapter. He has messages for those who are lost, those who can’t see that they are lost, and those who seek to find and reclaim those who are lost.
Doctrine and Covenants 18:10–16 Your joy will be great if you help others find their way to Christ when you are in heaven together.
Personal Study: What was Christ teaching in the parable of
the unjust steward?
Elder James E.
Talmage explained one lesson we can learn from the parable: “Be diligent; for
the day in which you can use your earthly riches will soon pass. Take a lesson
from even the dishonest and the evil; if they are so prudent as to provide for
the only future they think of, how much more should you, who believe in an
eternal future, provide therefor! If you have not learned wisdom and prudence
in the use of ‘unrighteous mammon,’ how can you be trusted with the more
enduring riches?” (Jesus
the Christ [1916], 464).
Personal Study: Gratitude for my blessings will bring me
closer to God.
Do you return to
give thanks? Do you recognize the good others do for you and acknowledge your
gratitude to them. Do you send thank you notes? Would you have returned to
thank Jesus for healing you? What additional blessings did he receive? He
wasn’t just healed physically, but spiritually too. What additionally blessings
do you receive when you express thanks to others and to God.
verse 19
They faith hath made thee whole.
What is the relationship between faith and gratitude? How does practicing these
things help to make us whole?

Consider the
Goodness and Greatness of God
Personal Study: Jesus Christ is the Resurrection and the
Life.
Jesus raised Lazarus
from the dead. This was a testimony that He is the resurrection and the life.
What does that mean to you?
What words, phrases, or details in John 11:1–46 strengthen your faith that Jesus Christ is
“the resurrection, and the life”?
Family Study: What losses have you experienced? Luke 15:1–10
Though the loss of someone dying is sad and painful, we know
that through the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ we will all live
again.
Our concern should be more for those who have forsaken the Lord and their
covenant relationship with Him, and for those who haven’t known Him in this
life. We need to work to provide the way for them to understand and receive the
gospel and to experience the joy of finding and being found.
Family Study: Love
the prodigal Luke 15:11–32
Don’t
worry about someone getting more attention than you. As you love and serve the
Lord, your Father will help you feel whole and validation through the reception
of His Holy Spirit.
Family Study: Return and give thanks Luke 17:11–19
Start sending thank you notes to people again. Work on being more appreciative.
Family Study: We shall all rise from the dead John 11:1–46

Jesus
teaches, Beware of hypocrisy; lay up treasures in heaven rather than on earth;
prepare for the coming of the Lord; where much is given, much is required;
preaching the gospel causes division.
Vs 4 Jesus is the Savior of our
souls. We will get back a perfected body. If we are faithful to God, we need
not fear. This life will soon be over, and if we are valiant in our testimony
of Jesus Christ all will be well with us.
Vs 6-7 We are God's
children, and of infinite worth to Him.
Vs 12 I love that if I am
faithful to the Lord, He will send His Spirit to give me what I need when I
need it.
The foolish rich man (Luke 12:13–21)
Vs 15 Think about these
words from the Savior. What does your life consist of? What really gives your
life meaning and substance?
Vs 21-32 If we seek the Kingdom of God, we will have all
that we need. We will always have sufficient for our needs. And it is our
Father's good pleasure to give us the kingdom with all spiritual gifts and an
inheritance with Him.

Jesus
teaches, Repent or perish—He gives the parable of the barren fig tree, heals a
woman on the Sabbath, and likens the kingdom of God to a mustard seed—He
discusses whether few or many are saved and laments over Jerusalem.
Vs 6-10 The parable of the
barren fig tree in the vineyard.
Vs 14-17 Healings and
loosing infirmities are the Lord's work and should be ours too on the Sabbath
days.
Vs 18-21 The Kindgdm fo Gd
is like a grain of mustard seed and like leaven.
Vs 24-25
We need to live the doctrine of Christ, making
covenants and receiving ordinances, obeying His commandments and doing His
works.
Vs 28-30 Everyone will have an opportunity to choose and to follow Jesus. What
are you doing with yours?
Vs 31-35 Jesus came to give His life for us. We are lost
without Him. But His arms are stretched out still.

Jesus
again heals on the Sabbath—He teaches humility and gives the parable of the
great supper—Those who follow Him must forsake all else.
Vs 3-5 Jesus answered the
question He himself posed, "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?"
by healing the man with the drospy. People who are struggling are much more
important than cattle.
The great supper (Luke 14:12–24)
Vs 10-11 Never presume
your importance. Be humble and grateful for whichever seat you are given.
Vs 13-14 Do good to those who can never repay you, just like Jesus has done
for you.
Vs 15 If you abase yourself here, doing your Father's
will, you will be exalted and be fed at your Father's table.
Vs 21-23 Brother Boyd read about this great supper in Sunday school
yesterday, and said that today this scripture is being fulfilled. And so it is.
We are inviting the humble to join us. The proud are caught up in the cares of
the world.
The Church's mission is fourfold: perfecting the saints,
proclaiming the gospel, redeeeming the deal, and caring for the poor and the
needy.
There are many poor and needy that are now being bidden to come to
the Lord's supper.

Jesus
gives the parables of the lost sheep, the piece of silver, and the prodigal
son.
Vs 10 This should be our
attitude here too. We need to stop holding grudges and stop waiting to see what
someone will do wrong next. We need to rejoice and seek retention for ourselves
and others.
The prodigal son (Luke 15:11–32)
Vs 27 So often it is a waiting game for a parent. Bob
and I had so much joy when Tom and Whitney were baptized again. There was
rejoicing, but we didnt' get to be there. I think the partying and festivities
are helpful for the repentant soul to feel his worth to the Lord and to his
family.
Vs 31-32 The faithful have the
inheritance already. Though the younger son sold all his inheritance for
nothing, yet he came home, willing to repent and begin again.
It was necessary to celebrate. The son was spiritually dead, and
now he had the chance of life.

Jesus
gives the parable of the unjust steward—He teaches of service and condemns
divorce—He gives the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.
The unjust steward (Luke 16:1–12)
Vs 8-9 The Lord expects us to take care of our earthly
businesses and learn how to handle income and debt and be good stewards now. If
we are good stewards with what He has given us, He will entrust us with more,
and heavenly blessings too.
|Vs 10-11 Further
explanation. If you are honest and have integrity in small things, you will
also be trusted with great things.
Vs 12 If we are faithful stewards and treat our
employment as if we were the owner, we will be blessed to own more ourselves.
Vs 13 We still need to put the Lord first, even though we have to have jobs to
take care of our physical needs.
Vs 16 Jesus brought the kingdom of heaven.
The rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31)
Vs 31 The Pharisees would not hearken to Moses, or accept John, or
recognize the Christ.
Loving God and serving His children will make us recognize truth
and hearken to His prophets.

Jesus
speaks of offenses, forgiveness, and faith—Even the faithful are unprofitable
servants—Ten lepers are healed—Jesus discourses on the Second Coming.
Vs 1 Because we are human, and
because we have feelings, offenses will happen. We need to work on refining our
communications and interactions, and be forgiving. But the Lord is not pleased
when offend on purpose.
Vs 3-5 Although I find the
apostles reply humorous, this is exactly what we need to do in order to
forgive. I'm sure theirs was a humble reply.
Vs 10 I think the Lord
expects us to go above and beyond.
Vs 15-19 Not only did the Samaritan cry out his thanks with a loud voice,
he came back to the Savior and fell down at His feet.
His gratitude and humility
allowed the Savior to make him spiritually clean as well. He was made whole.
Vs 20-21 Sign seeking is wrong. We should prepare and wait on the Lord and make
ourselves ready for the Lord's Coming.
Jesus brought the kingdom, and they didn't recognize it. Are you
working on having the kingdom of God within you?
Vs 24 Everyone will know when Jesus comes back to
earth again.
Vs 26 It is like Noah's day now, maybe even worse in
some things. Jesus will return; we have that promise.
Vs 30 Be prepared, and
when you repent and covenant with God, do not look back. Look forward to His
kingdom.
Vs 33 What are you doing to save others? Do not fear.
Vs 37 See JST: Wherever
there is a body of the church, more saints will be gathered together there!
JST 36 And
they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord, shall they be taken?
37 And
he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is gathered; or, in other words, whithersoever the saints are
gathered, thither will the eagles be gathered together; or, thither will the remainder
be gathered together.
38 This
he spake, signifying the gathering of his saints; and of angels descending and
gathering the remainder unto them; the one from the bed, the other from the
grinding, and the other from the field, whithersoever he listeth.
39 For
verily there shall be new heavens, and a new earth, wherein dwelleth
righteousness.
40 And
there shall be no unclean thing; for the earth becoming old, even as a garment,
having waxed in corruption, wherefore it vanisheth away, and the footstool
remaineth sanctified, cleansed from all sin.

Jesus
testifies that He is the Resurrection and the Life—Mary and Martha testify of
Him—He raises Lazarus from the dead—Caiaphas speaks prophetically of the death
of Jesus.
Vs 2 This is where we are told
that this is Mary Magdalene who anointed the Lord at the dinner.
Vs 4 Jesus knew Lazarus
was going to die. He also knew that He had power to raise Him from dead, and
would do so to increase their faith in the resurrection.
Vs 5 Jesus loves all of
us, but these people were part of his earthly family.
Vs 21-24 I felt like this
when Ed died. Melinda also had faith that he could be brought back to life. But
that was not to be. Yet we both know that he'll rise in the resurrection.
Vs 25-27 I believe in both Jesus's and Martha's
testimony that Jesus is the resurrection and the life, the Son of God and the
Savior of the world.
Vs 28-36 Mary ran to
Jesus, after Martha told her where He was. She too said, if you'd been here, my
brother would still be alive. She and those that accompanied her will all
crying, and Jesus cried with them. He sorrowed in their sorrows.
Vs 39-40 Martha was so practical. Someone who'd been dead a few days,
without refrigeration, would start to stink.
But Jesus wanted them to believe, to hope, to imagine, to desire
that which they really wanted, their brother's return to life. If they would
believe, the glory of God would be manifested.
Vs 41-44 Jesus communed with His Father so that all
those present could hear and see and believe, as He called Lazarus forth from
the grave.
Vs 45-53 How much those who went to the Pharisees
understood, and how much they understood themselves, I don't know. But isn't it
sad that they feared people believing in His miracles. Though He has changed
the course of all mankind for all eternity, there are still those who would
rather sell him out and be left without miracles and His saving grace. How much
Caiaphas understood, I don't know either. But John's testimony is correct.
Jesus suffered, died, and lives for all of us. I am thankful for the High
Priest of us all and the sacrifice He willingly gave.
What words, phrases,
or details in John 11:1–46 strengthen your faith that Jesus Christ is
“the resurrection, and the life”?
