NT Come Follow Me 25
Introduction:
I’m going to read the scripture chapters first this week.
“Not My Will, but Thine, Be
Done”
I don't know if we
witnessed this event from heaven, or if like His apostles we couldn't for
sorrow. But Heavenly Father always knows and always sees what we are going
through. I am so thankful for the Atonement of Jesus Christ and for the
reassurances of His love, and our Father's love, for me born through the
Spirit.
Personal Study: Conversion is an ongoing process.
Luke 22:32 When you are converted, strengthen your brothers and sisters.
What is the difference between have a testimony and being converted?
Luke 22:33
Have you ever felt strong enough to do anything you could for the Lord, even
die for Him?
Why are our feelings inconsistent and sometimes our commitment stronger than
other times?
How can you work to strengthen others? How does ministering
strengthen your own testimony and conversion?
Mark 14:27–31
Remember that although Peter denied knowing Jesus, he also died for His
unfailing testimony of Him, and he though it an honor. He did not feel worthy
to suffer the same death, so he asked to be crucified upside down.
Personal Study: The Savior suffered for me in Gethsemane.
Drawing the Power of
Jesus Christ into Our Lives President Russell M. Nelson invited us to
“invest time in learning about the Savior and His atoning sacrifice.”
You might start by
prayerfully pondering the Savior’s suffering in Gethsemane.
Read the following scriptures with the questions in mind:
Why was the Savior’s Atonement necessary? (See 2 Nephi 2:5–10, 17–26; 9:5–26; Alma 34:8–16; 42:9–26.)
2 Nephi 2:5–10, 17–26
2 Nephi 2:5–10 We needed Jesus to make intercession for us. Because He was
perfect, He could atone for our sins, and through faith in Him and repentance,
we can be made clean. He was the first to rise from the dead, making the
resurrection of all mankind a reality.
2 Nephi 2:17-26 Adam and Eve were tempted and they fell, and we make mistake
and fall too. Because of the fall, we are able to have agency and learn and
progress, and find happiness. Because of Jesus Christ, we can repent of our
sins, and find forgiveness and salvation through faith in Him.
9:5–26 2 Nephi 9:5-26 Because of the merciful plan of
our Heavenly Father, He gave His son to redeem us from our fallen state and to
give us the possibility of a glorious resurrection.
Alma 34:8–16 According to the great of the Eternal God
and atonement had to be made for men. He loved us so much, that He asked His
Beloved Son to save us all; and this we have to choose by our faith in Him and
our repentance, turning to Him and desiring to follow Him and keep his
commandments.
Alma 42:9–26 The
atonement was necessary to satisfy the demands of justice. God’s mercy can save
us from both spiritual and physical death, so that we can again enter His presence,
if we repent and are clean at the judgment day.
·
What did the Savior experience as He suffered? (See Isaiah 53:3–5; Mosiah 3:7; Alma 7:11–13; Doctrine and Covenants 19:16–19.)
Isaiah 53:3–5 He bore our griefs, sorrows,
transgressions, and iniquities.
Mosiah 3:7 Our temptations, pains, hunger, thirst,
fatigue, anguish for our wickedness and abominations.
Alma 7:11–13 He suffered our pains, afflictions, and
temptations, and sicknesses. He suffered our bondages and infirmities.
13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth
according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that
he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his
deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.
Even though he had an understanding of all these things through the Spirit, He
chose to personally suffer it all for me and for you!
Doctrine and Covenants 19:16–19 18 Which suffering
caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and
to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I
might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink.
·
How does Christ’s suffering affect my life? (See John 10:10–11; Hebrews 4:14–16; 1 John 1:7; Alma 34:31; Moroni 10:32–33
John 10:10–11 Jesus came as the Giver of Life, that we
might enjoy all things more abundantly. Do we understand the depth in which He
was willing to sink, so that He could lift us?
Hebrews 4:14–16 It’s interesting that we read earlier,
that Jesus was slapped and asked if he dared to speak to the High Priest like
that. But Jesus is the High Priest of all living! Though He is above us all, He
made Himself like unto us all, suffering all the temptations and sicknesses we
face, and yet not succumbing to sin. He understands us. He knows us perfectly.
We can trust Him. We can approach His throne and beg His mercy. He died for us.
He lives for us. And He can make us free and keep us safe and carry us home to
our Father.
1 John 1:7 If we walk in the Light of the Savior,
we will have fellowship with His saints, and His blood will cleanse us from all
sin.
Alma 34:31 If we will remember Christ and turn to him (repent) and not harden our hearts, we will experience immediately the great plan of redemption.
Moroni 10:32–33 Be believing and go to
Him. Deny the wicked things of this world and love Him who loves you perfectly.
32
Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all
ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God
with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you,
that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye
are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.
33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and
deny not his power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God,
through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the
Father unto the remission of your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.
Jesus suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane: which had oil trees
and an olive press for making oil. He suffered as if he was making oil to sanctify
and heal us.
Strengthened by the Atonement of Jesus Christ
Luke 10:34 As our Good Shepherd and as the
Good Samaritan, Jesus can bind up our wounds and pour saving oil upon us.
He bled from every pore to cleanse and heal us and give us life everlasting.
Matthew 26:36–46 His suffering in the Garden, while His apostles sleep.
Mark 14:32–42 Even after He’d suffered for all creation, He had compassion on those who were tired enough to sleep.
Personal Study: The Savior’s “kingdom is not of this world.”
John 18:36 Jesus’s Kingdom is not of this
world. He wasn’t raising an army to establish Himself as King, even though He
was the rightful heir according to the succession of the kings. He was already
established as the Prince of Peace by His Father, and through His gospel and
the fulfillment of His offering, He is the Eternal King of Kings and Lord of
Lords.
Family Study: Jesus Prays for Me
Luke 22:31–32
Jesus told Peter that He prayed for Him (so that he’d be protected from Satan).
Whom should I be praying for?
Family Study: Learning
about Jesus’s suffering for me in Gethsemane is a sacred experience
Luke 22:39–46 (also Matthew 26:36–46; Mark 14:32–42)
What pictures and songs have helped you feel the Spirit of
the Atonement and Christ’s love for you?
Family Study: “Not my
will, but thine, be done.”
Luke 22:42 How can putting the Father’s and the Savior’s will before your own wants bless you and others through you? When have you done this more fully? I know I strive to, although imperfectly.
Family Study: Jesus healed the man’s ear.
Luke 22:50–51; John 18:10–11Jesus was ready to accept His Father’s will and give up His life. He was also very compassionate to the suffering of others.
Family Study: Jesus came to bear witness to the truth.
John 18:37–38
Our God is a God of truth, and Jesus came to fulfill His plan. Jesus’s word is truth,
and He is the Word of God. He will lead us home, if we follow Him.

Oh Say, What Is Truth? Testify of Christ. Publish peace.
Jesus
institutes the sacrament—He suffers in Gethsemane and is betrayed and
arrested—Peter denies knowing Him—Jesus is smitten and mocked.
Vs 11-12 Jesus told
Peter and John who should furnish the guest0chamber where they would have the
Last Supper.
Vs 15-20 The first
sacrament of the Lord Jesus Christ, administered by Him to his apostles.
Vs 26-27 Seek to serve, not to set yourself up.
Vs 28-30 Those who serve the Lord in His kingdom, will
have place with Him forever.
Vs 32 We all need to be
strengthened in the Lord in our own testimony and coversion, so that we might
then strengthen others and invite them to follow Jesus too.
Vs 39-40 It seems that we should not only pray to not
enter temptation, but prayer to be awake and aware, and recognize truth.
Vs 41-46 Jesus the greatest of all, prayed when He was in great agony,
andan angel appears to strengthen Him; when the agony became unbearable, he
prayed more earnestly. This is what we all need to do.
I know my sister Kathy was strengthened in her cancer by her faith
in Jesus Christ and was also visited by angels.
Vs 53 The chief priests and captains of the temple
wanted to destroy Jesus, but they didn't do it in the open. They waited for an
occasion like this, and Judas provided it.
Vs 60-62 That look from
Jesus must have been heart-wrenching. I'm sure it was full of love, but Peter
must have felt such agony in his own betrayal and in seeing that love.
Vs 67-70 No one should be
condemned for publishing peace and for telling the truth; but, the Prince of
Peace was.

Jesus is
betrayed and arrested—He is examined and maltreated first before Annas, then
before Caiaphas—Peter denies knowing Jesus—Jesus is arraigned before Pilate.
Vs 4-8 I love John's account. He
was an eye-witness to these events. Jesus's glory, power, and might were overwhelming
to these people whose works were in the dark. They seemed to fear their own
task, but were still set on doing it.
Vs 11 Jesus was ready and willing to give up His life
for us. He had already atoned for our sins in the garden, and He was ready to
seal His testimony and mission with His blood, so that we could all repent and
rise with Him in the resurrection.
Vs 19-21 They weren't honest in their questioning. They
wanted to find an accusation against Him.
Vs 22-23 How often do we strike out at others becasue we
disagree with them; not because they are wrong or disagreeable, but that we
don't like what they say or who they are?
Vs 33-37 Pilate questions Jesus, and Jesus let's Him
know that His kingdom is not of this world, but that those who are truthful
hear His voice.
Vs 38 Just like a politician. "What is
truth?" It isn't something that changes according to your own desires or
interests. It's Eternal, and so is Jesus. Pilate found no fault in Jesus.
