NT Come Follow Me 26

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 26

Introduction:

I’m going to read the scripture chapters first this week.

“It Is Finished”

Jesus is Pure Love. This is Charity.

1 Corinthians 13:5 Jesus wasn’t easily provoked. Because of His love for us, He was quiet, humble and submissive to the Father’s will.

1 Corinthians 13:4, 7 He has born all things for me and He suffers long for me; He is still patient and kind to me.

His love for His mother and those who were suffering because of His death is remarkable. And He forgave those who put Him to death. He bore all things for all of us. He taught us through His own example.

Moroni 7:47 Charity is the Pure Love of Christ.

Personal Study: Jesus Christ’s willingness to suffer shows His love for the Father and for all of us.

1 Nephi 19:9 Jesus allowed the mocking and the torment and agony, because of His longsuffering and His great love for all people.

And the world, because of their iniquity, shall judge him to be a thing of naught; wherefore they scourge him, and he suffereth it; and they smite him, and he suffereth it. Yea, they spit upon him, and he suffereth it, because of his loving kindness and his long-suffering towards the children of men.”

This was all prophesied, both in the Holy Bible and The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. And He suffered all of it, for me and for you!

Personal Study: Mocking cannot change the truth.

No matter how much the people mocked Jesus, the truth remains that He is the Christ the Son of God. No matter the mocking, ridicule, and trials the prophets and the saints of all times have and will face, it does not change the truth, that we will receive our salvation because of Jesus Christ the Son of God, and because of the love that the Father has for all of us.

Matthew 27:54 Truly this was the Son of God.

Personal Study: Jesus Christ suffered alone so I don’t have to.

Matthew 27:46 Mark 15:34 Even though earlier, in the Garden, angels had strengthened Jesus, at this time He had to be left along to accomplish the atonement. He worked out all the details for every human soul to be saved, upon conditions of repentance.

“Because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. … Trumpeted from the summit of Calvary is the truth that we will never be left alone nor unaided, even if sometimes we may feel that we are” (“None Were with Him”).

Personal Study: The Savior is our example of forgiveness.

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
JST (Meaning the soldiers who crucified him,) …
But I also think that these words apply to all of us.

President Henry B. Eyring taught: “We must forgive and bear no malice toward those who offend us. The Savior set the example from the cross. … We do not know the hearts of those who offend us” (“That We May Be One”).

Family Study: Unfairly condemned

Videos: “Jesus Is Condemned before Pilate” and “Jesus Is Scourged and Crucified.”

Family Study: Be True to what you know is right.

What lessons do we learn from Pilate’s experience about standing up for what we know is right?

Family Study: Statement Jesus made on the cross.

Family Study: Jesus is the Son of God.

Mark 15:39 How has reading about the Crucifixion strengthened your testimony that Jesus is the “Son of God”?

Family Study: Love and support family members.

John 19:25–27 Jesus wanted John to take care of His mother.

Emulate the Savior’s life. “It is helpful to study the ways the Savior taught—the methods He used and the things He said. But the Savior’s power to teach and lift others came from the way He lived and the kind of person He was. The more diligently you strive to live like Jesus Christ, the more you will be able to teach like Him” (Teaching in the Savior’s Way13).

Jesus is accused and condemned before Pilate—Barabbas is released—Jesus is mocked, crucified, and buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathæa.

Vs 3-6 Have you ever realized too late the severity of something you did wrong? Did Judas not know that Jesus would be condemned to death? Was he to set on getting back for a perceived slight that he sold his own soul? This is such a sad scenario. An apostle of Jesus Christ betrayed the Lord.

Vs 17-26 Pilate wanted to appease the crowds, even more than his wife. He knew himself that Jesus was innocent, and he'd been warned by his wife not to do Jesus any wrong; but, he went against his own better judgment and listened to the crowds, delivering Barabbas, and condemning Jesus unto death.

Vs 46 Jesus needed to feel the withdrawal of His Father's presence in order to sink below all things, that He might lift us above all things. The Atonement had to be entirely his choice; He willingly submitted to all the will of the Father and died for you and for me.

Vs 50-54 The very God of Israel died for us all. the earth groaned and mourned. The Roman centurion witnessed that truly Jesus was the Son of God. After His resurrection, many others were resurrected and visited the people, clearly also witnessing His divinity.

Vs 55-61 His disciples reverenced Him in His death. The women that loved him, ministered to unto Him. Joseph of Arimathea received his body from Pilate and laid Him in his own tomb.

Pilate decrees the death of Jesus—Jesus is mocked and crucified between two thieves—He dies and is buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathæa.

Vs 2-5 Jesus said nothing in His own defense, because His purpose was to become our defense.

Vs 9-14 The chief priests moved the people to choose Barabbas's release and crucify Jesus. Why were they so easily persuaded by the chief priests? Did they fear banishment, or even being judged as Jesus was?

Vs 15 Why did Pilate need to content the people? Why didn't he let Jesus, whom he knew was a just man, go?

Vs 45-47 Joseph of Arimathea treated the body of Christ with such dignity and reverence.

Jesus is taken before Pilate, then to Herod, and then to Pilate again—Barabbas is released—Jesus is crucified between two thieves—He is buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathæa.

Vs 13-16 Out of his own mouth, Pilate said he found no fault in Jesus and that Herod did not either.

Why would he then chastise Him?

Vs 18-24 In Pilate's favor, he tried three times to convince the people that he should let Jesus go; but, he was the leader, why didnt' he just make that decision.

Vs 30-31 The House of Israel truly has suffered many things because of the times they (we) have forsaken Jesus Christ and despised Him.

Vs 31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

Vs 34 Jesus continues to pray this for all of us who so foolishly condemn Him and mock Him. I am thankful for His love.

Vs 39-43 May I ever acknowledge the goodness of Jesus Christ and my need for His forgiveness and redemption. I am thankful that this man believed in the Lord and asked for His mercy, which Jesus instantly promised to him. He knows our hearts.

Vs 46 Jesus willingly laid down His life and trusted in His Father that He'd be able to take it us again.

Vs 50-56 Joseph was among those who counseled and made discisions. He did not consent to what was done to Jesus. He begged for Pilate to give Him Jesus's body that He might receive a proper burial.

There was no time for the anointed of Christ's body, because the Sabbath was upon them. So Mary Magdeline certainly had anointed the body of Jesus earlier for His burial.

Jesus is scourged and crucified—He places His mother in John’s care—He dies and His side is pierced with a spear—He is buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathæa.

Vs 4-16 These were strange times. Pilate hadn't been acquainted with Jesus, His teachings and miracles; yet, he knew He wasn't worthy of death, and he sensed that it was wrong to kill Him. He feared even that Jesus was truly the King of the Jews and the Son of God. But then again, Pilate just was fearful.

He would have no power to kill Jesus, unless it was permitted by His Father.

Vs 19-22 Pilate didn't put the proper title on Jesus's cross, the very reason for which the Jews condemned Him. He wouldn't change that.

Vs 25-26 From the cross, Jesus showed mercy for His mother and her well-being.

Vs 35-37 John saw and bear record of Jesus's death and how the scriptures were fulfilled in that none of His bones were broken, but they pierced His side.

Vs 38-42 I'm thankful for the righteous men among the leaders of Israel that recognized the divinity of Jesus Christ. Joseph game him a tomb, and Nicodemus prepared His body with clean linens and spices.
