NT Come Follow Me 33

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 33

Introduction:

“The Power of God unto Salvation”

Romans 1:16 Paul helped to spread the gospel to the believing Jews and Gentiles; even in Rome. The church was becoming established, but was still small considering the overall population.

Personal Study: What are the Epistles, and how are they organized?

Paul’s epistles to the saints in Rome was written near the end of Paul’s missionary journey. His epistles are organized according to the letter’s length (except for Hebrews).

Pauline Epistles

Personal Study:  “The just shall live by faith.”

The law.

The Law of Moses was fulfilled. Christ set a higher law, “The law of faith.” We need to have Faith in Jesus Christ and follow His doctrine in order to gain salvation; but it is by His grace that we are saved!

Romans 3:23–31 We all fall short of the glory of God, so we need to establish our faith through covenants and ordinances with the Father and accept the gift of His Son.

Circumcision, uncircumcision.

Romans 2:25–29 The law of circumcision had an end with the fulfillment of the Law of Moses. But we should have a broken heart and a contrite spirit. God’s covenant people are those who make and keep covenants with Him.

Acts 15:23–29 The disciples of Jesus should still live clean and pure lives.

Justification, justify, justified.

“When we are justified, we are forgiven, declared guiltless, and freed from eternal punishment for our sins.”

Justification, Justify “A person is justified by the Savior’s grace through faith in Him. This faith is shown by repentance and obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel. Jesus Christ’s Atonement enables mankind to repent and be justified or pardoned from punishment they otherwise would receive.”

Justification and Sanctification

It is through faith in Jesus Christ, repentance of our sins, being baptized, receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost and being confirmed as members of His Church, and keeping on the covenant path through continually following His doctrine that He is able to offer us the gift of justification and sanctification. Our righteousness is required; but He has already paid the price for our salvation and it is a gift from God.

Grace.

Grace

“It is through the grace of the Lord Jesus, made possible by His atoning sacrifice, that mankind will be raised in immortality, every person receiving his body from the grave in a condition of everlasting life. It is likewise through the grace of the Lord that individuals, through faith in the Atonement of Jesus Christ and repentance of their sins, receive strength and assistance to do good works that they otherwise would not be able to maintain if left to their own means. This grace is an enabling power that allows men and women to lay hold on eternal life and exaltation after they have expended their own best efforts.”

It is through grace that we can have the desire to keep on the covenant path. With faith in Jesus Christ and application of His life and teaching in our own lives, we can gain a desire to be more like Him and “establish” more fully our faith in Him, thus receiving a greater amount of His power to enable us on our journey. He is the One that can lead us back to our Father’s presence. Our own efforts, though necessary for our growth and development, can never save us.

2 Nephi 25:23 It is important for us to stay on the covenant path and to invite others to join us, because it is only through the grace of the Father in the gift of His Son that we can be saved. So we need to conscientiously do all that we can do to ensure that we and our loved ones and others can receive this great gift, through faith in Jesus Christ and following His doctrine.

His Grace Is Sufficient

Personal Study: My actions should reflect and increase my conversion.

Romans 2:17–29 The Lord no longer required circumcision. What is important is that we become pure in heart and remember our covenants with the Savior by striving to live as He would have us do. We don’t need to judge how others are living their faith; we need to watch ourselves and make sure that we are faithful.

Alma 25:15–16 How do today’s outward performances strengthen your faith in Jesus Christ? What about the sacrament? Is it of benefit to you? Our your outward actions leading to a change of heart within you?

The Challenge to Become

Personal Study: Through Jesus Christ, I can be forgiven of my sins.

Romans 3:10 What does the scripture mean, “There are none righteous, no not one” ?

Romans 3:23 We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

Romans 5:2 But “we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

Personal Study: Jesus Christ invites me to “walk in newness of life.”

How is the Gospel of Jesus Christ changing the way you live?

While you read Romans 6, think of examples of how following the Savior is helping you to walk in a newness of life.

verse 4 “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

Family Study: Show that you aren’t ashamed of being a Christian.

Elaine Case is a good example of this. She tells people her name is Sister Case, tells them what Church she belongs to, and invites them to find and listen to the missionaries where they live; and tells them that it will change their lives. Powerful pure witness, without fear.

Romans 1:16–17
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Family Study: Grace is a gift; it is not earned.

Romans 3:23–28

Have you been open to receiving grace? How can you be? Do you feel the Lord’s gift of grace working in your own life?

How can I receive His grace more fully in my life?

2 Corinthians 12:9 His grace is sufficient for me. See my blogpost: https://intelligentgospelstudy.blogspot.com/2023/08/his-grace-is-sufficient-for-me.html

Family Study: Like Paul, we can glory in tribulation.

Romans 3:23–28 I chose these same verses to do a write up for the Church News after Robby died. I will need to see if I can find that.

Family Study: Baptism offers us the opportunity to walk with a newness of life.

Romans 6:3–6 We are buried in the water, and should also bury our past sins. We rise out of the water with a new name upon us, even Jesus Christ, and we can walk with the resurrected Lord.

How does making and keeping our baptismal covenants help us “walk in newness of life”?

When I Am Baptized

The gospel is the power of God unto salvation through Jesus Christ—The wrath of God rests on those guilty of murder, homosexual practices, fornication, and other sins if the guilty do not repent.

Vs 16-17 Make sue that you believe. There is power in your being believing. And if you believe, do not be afraid to share that, so that others might also gain the faith and power that they need for their salvation. If you are a disciple of Christ, live by faith in Him.

Vs 19-21 Use your agency to choose God. We are all born with the light of Christ and can clearly discern between good and evil, when we are honest.

Vs 31-32 Paul lists a number of sins in the chapter that are prevalent in our day. We have to be covenant keepers and not follow the trends of the immoral, nor find pleasure in things that kill the soul.

God will render to every person according to his or her deeds—Both Jews and Gentiles will be judged by gospel laws.

Vs 6-16 Our Father will render to us according to our deeds. He is no respecter of persons, but He knows who loves Him and keeps His commandments and who does not. "God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ."

Vs 25-29 God can tell if we are keeping the commandments or not, no matter what our outward appearance show is. Live the Spirit of the law, and don't seek for the praise of men.

Man is not justified by the law of Moses—He is justified through righteousness, which comes through faith in Christ, made possible through Christ’s atoning sacrifice.

Vs 9-12 Every one of us has fallen from grace, and Jesus alone is the only One that can lift us up and keep us in the way.

Vs 20-31 The Law of Moses could not save man from their sins, it could only define their sins and point them unto Jesus Christ. We can all be saved through faith in Jesus Christ, both Jew and Gentile. His grace and redemption can justify us and make us at one again with Him and the Father, through repentance and the remission of sins, as we continue faithful. We need to be thankful for those things that point us to Christ, but our boasting should be in Him who is our Redeemer, not in our lineage. We are all children of God and children of Adam and Eve. We are only children of the covenant through making and keeping covenants with Him that He has established.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/rom/4?lang=eng

Abraham’s faith was accounted to him for righteousness—Man is justified by faith, righteous works, and grace.

Vs 11-12 Circumcision was an outward sign of the covenant that God made with Abraham; but the covenant was made before Abraham was circumcized.

In that day, male children were circumcized at eight days old as a reminder for them to enter into the covenant of their own accord when eight years old.

From the time of Christ's resurrection on, circumcision was no longer requisite to keeping the commandments or becoming the Lord's people.

Vs 13-25 Becoming heirs to salvation is a gift given to those who believe on the Son of God and follow Jesus Christ; this gift is not given through the Law of Moses, though the law served a purpose to point believers to Jesus Christ.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/rom/5?lang=eng

Man is justified through the blood of Christ—Adam fell, and Christ atoned that man might be saved.

Vs 3-5 One of my favorites. This gave me much hope after the death of Robby. And the Spirit led me to know that serving my own family, teaching in primary, and sharing the gospel would bring me peace and joy; and it did.

Vs 8-12 The fall of man cut us off from the presence of the Lord; but, through the atonement and resurrection of Jesus, we can be brought back into His presence.

Vs 17-21 "Adam fell that man might be, and men are that they might have joy." Through Jesus Christ, we can all overcome the effects of sin and death, and enter again into our Father's presence.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/rom/6?lang=eng

Baptism is in similitude of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ—The wages of sin is death—Christ brings eternal life.

Vs 3-6 We must leave our sinful life in the past and rely upon the holiness in Christ to cleanse us and to heal us. From this point on, we should be His disciples and live as He would have us do.

Vs 9-16 Our acceptance of Christ and covenant with the Father binds us to be His disciples and to abandon the sinful ways of this world. We cannot embrace our old sins and have the Spirit with us and become His.

Vs 19 Be humble and yield your heart and your will to God.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
