NT Come Follow Me 37

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 37

Introduction:

“God Is Not the Author of Confusion, but of Peace”

1 Corinthians 15:3–4Christ died for our sins … he was buried, and that he rose again the third day.”

We are also Christian’s! Joseph Smith said that this is the essence of our religion! As an apostle of Jesus Christ, this was also his testimony.

The Prophet Joseph Smith said: “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it”.

1 Corinthians 15:12 Then, like now, there were those professing to be Christian that did not believe in the resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:2 We need to hold onto the things we’ve been taught, and never adopt the philosophies of the world (or of the devil).

1 Corinthians 14:33 “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”

1 Corinthians 16:13 “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” Or like President Nelson would say, “Take your vitamins.”

Personal Study: I can seek the gift of prophecy.

1 Corinthians 14:3, 31, 39–40. The gift of prophesy is given to everyone who teaches by the Spirit.

Revelation 19:10 “I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Prophecy, Prophesy

Joel 2:28 and Acts 2:17–18

28 ¶ And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

D&C 1:37–38
37 Search these commandments, for they are true and faithful, and the prophecies and promises which are in them shall all be fulfilled.

38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

1 Corinthians 14:39 If I am to covet the gift of prophesy, I must have the desire to learn the word of the Lord, apply it, gain testimony of it; and then teach it by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Doctrine and Covenants 11:23–28 These verses from the Lord to Hyrum confirm what I wrote above.

Alma 17:3 “But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.”

Personal Study: How does the statement about women in these verses apply today?

1 Corinthians 14:34–35 These verses of keeping a woman silent in church and under subjection to what knowledge her husband has alone aren’t in keeping with eternal laws, but with the customs of the times of Paul (and even to a degree in the early history of our country).

A Plea to My Sisters

President Russell M. Nelson said to the women of the Church today: “We … need your strength, your conversion, your conviction, your ability to lead, your wisdom, and your voices. The kingdom of God is not and cannot be complete without women who make sacred covenants and then keep them, women who can speak with the power and authority of God!”

Personal Study: Jesus Christ gained victory over death.

1 Corinthians 15:141 Corinthians 15:14 “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.”

Everything else in Christianity hangs on the very fact that Jesus was resurrected. The hope and promise found in the good news is that we can be forgiven (on conditions of faith and repentance) and that we can live forever with our Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:12 Today there are those who still teach there is no resurrection, and no requirement of baptism. So they pretty much negate the message Jesus Christ brought to the world, and yet they claim to be Christians.

How has your belief in the resurrection brought you hope and newness of life in the here and now?

2 Nephi 9:6–19 The Plan of Salvation and Happiness came from our Heavenly Father. He sent His Son, that through Him the world might be saved.
Vs 8 “O the wisdom of God, his mercy and grace!)
Vs 10 “O how great the goodness of our God, who prepareth a way for our escape.”
Read vs 11-12!
Vs 13 “O how great the plan of our God!”
Vs 17 “O the greatness and the justice of our God!”
Vs 19 “O the greatness of the mercy of our God, the Holy One of Israel! “

Alma 40:19–23 Everyone will be resurrection, because Jesus was resurrected.

Doctrine and Covenants 93:33–34 When we are resurrected (our bodies and spirits again reunited), we can receive a fullness of joy.

verse 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ makes him more than a mere mortal man or even a prophet. He fulfilled His Father’s will, and He is the Firstborn Son of God and the First Fruit of the Resurrection. He is the Immortal Messiah, the Savior of all mankind.

If he had not been resurrected, He would be none of these.

1 Corinthians 15:29 Baptism for the dead is a witness that life goes on beyond the grave. Also, baptism itself is a witness of a newness of life and of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

How has temple and family history work strengthened your faith in the doctrine of resurrection?

How have your life’s experiences strengthened your faith in the resurrection?

The reality of the human soul and of the eternity of the Spirit and of the promise of resurrection and Eternal Life became much more real to me and Bob and our family when our little Robby passed away. All of our learning since childhood became more than rote memorization, it became part of our very being.

Doctrine and Covenants 138:11–37 Since the time Jesus visited the Spirit World following His death, the gospel has been preached in the world of Spirits. All have an equal chance for redemption through the merits of His grace, both living and dead.

Personal Study: Resurrected bodies are different from mortal bodies.

1 Corinthians 15:35 “How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?”

In verses 36–54, Paul describes the difference between mortal and resurrected bodies.

COME BACK to this:
Compare verses 40–42 with Doctrine and Covenants 76:50–112.

Joseph Smith Translation, 1 Corinthians 15:40 “Also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial, and bodies telestial; but the glory of the celestial, one; and the terrestrial, another; and the telestial, another.”

Luke 24:39 Look at ME! Behold, my hands and my feet. See that it is I! Handle me, I am a body and not just a spirit.

Alma 11:43–45 All will be resurrected and stand before God and receive a kingdom of glory. (Few will be given a kingdom devoid of glory, but they’ll still be resurrected)

Doctrine and Covenants 88:14–33

15 And the spirit and the body are the soul of man.

16 And the resurrection from the dead is the redemption of the soul.

17 And the redemption of the soul is through him that quickeneth all things, in whose bosom it is decreed that the poor and the meek of the earth shall inherit it.

Which law will you choose to abide?

28 They who are of a celestial spirit shall receive the same body which was a natural body; even ye shall receive your bodies, and your glory shall be that glory by which your bodies are quickened.

29 Ye who are quickened by a portion of the celestial glory shall then receive of the same, even a fulness.

33 For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift.

“There is one glory of the sun” (1 Corinthians 15:41).

Family Study: Baptism for the Dead

1 Corinthians 15:29 The Early Christian Church believed in the resurrection and they participated in the ordinances of baptism for the dead.

Why are we baptized for our ancestors?

What can I do more to help provide ordinance work for my own ancestors?

Video: “What Are Baptisms for the Dead?”

Baptisms for the Dead

John 3:5 Baptism is a necessary ordinance for all who have lived on earth.

“Because God is merciful, He has prepared a way for all people to receive the blessings of baptism. By performing proxy baptisms in behalf of those who have died, Church members offer these blessings to deceased ancestors. Individuals can then choose to accept or reject what has been done in their behalf.”

Matthew 3:13–17 Jesus was also baptized.

“Each individual has agency, or the right to choose. The validity of a baptism for the dead depends on the deceased person accepting it and choosing to accept and follow the Savior while residing in the spirit world. The names of deceased persons are not added to the membership records of the Church.”

“The New Testament indicates that baptisms for the dead were done during the time of the Apostle Paul (see 1 Corinthians 15:29). This ordinance was restored with the establishment of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

Family Study: Our Resurrected Bodies Will Not Be Subject to Decline Ever

1 Corinthians  15:35–54

You could show children things that are “corrupted” and things that are “perfect”.

Family Study: We Have Hope in Christ

1 Corinthians 15:55–57 How is the sting of death swallowed up in our hope in Christ? How can we travel onwards being temporarily without those whom we love so much?

Family Study: Take Your Vitamins and Be True to Your Covenants

1 Corinthians 16:13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

What does the word “watch” imply to you?

How can you stand fast in the faith? How can you help others stand fast?

He Is Risen!

People should desire spiritual gifts—Tongues and prophecy are compared—Prophecy is the greater gift—Paul says, You may all prophesy; covet to prophesy.

Vs 1,3, 5 You should seek to develop the gift of prophesy, through your study and faith. You should seek to teach by the Spirit of the Holy Ghost, so all can receive edification.

Vs 7-12 Individual gifts are really of no use, unless we have the spirit with us to use them to testify of Christ.

Vs 13, 15  Do all things with the Spirit!

Vs 18-19 It's a great gift to know many languages. But to speak five words of understanding with the Spirit invites the Spirit to teach and testify to others.

Vs 22 Prophesying is of benefit to the hearing believer!

Vs 26-32 Everyone is giving a chance to teach, exhort, and testify in the church. We are to support and sustain each other in this and do it for the benefit of edification and not self-gratification.

Christ died for our sins—He rose from the dead and was seen by many—All men will be resurrected—Paul speaks of baptism for the dead—The three degrees of glory are described—Victory over death comes through Christ.

Vs 1-10 Paul recounts that the resurrection of Jesus is sure. There were many witnesses to the Risen Lord, including Paul himself. He considers that he was unworthy to be called as an apostle, since he persecuted the church; but he acknowledges that the grace of God had been with him and that he labored diligently for the growth of the church.

Vs 12-22 The apostles did not lie, nor was their preaching in vain. Jesus who died did rise from the grave, being the firstfruits of the resurrection. As in Adam we all will die; even so in Christ, we will all rise again!

Vs 23 Those who are Christ’s will rise again at His Coming!

Vs 24-28 When Jesus comes again, all things will be subdued under Him.

Vs 29-31 I am thankful that all will rise again, and that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the grace of our Heavenly Father, baptism is available to all, so that we can all obtain to a hope of a glorious resurrection! IF this were not so, we would be in jeopardy all the time.

Vs 33-34 What kind of example are you being? Will others come to Jesus because of the way you talk and walk and act. Make sure that you don't sow contention, put offer an invitation to peace.

Vs 40-54 Our earthly bodies will become incorruptible perfected bodies, which will live forever. We will inherit a kingdom of glory according to the law which we choose to obey. If we are valiant in our testimony of Jesus Christ, we shall inherit celestial glory.

Vs 55-58 If we are steadfast in our testimony of Jesus Christ and true to our covenants, death will be sweet to us. We will be victorious through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Paul counsels, Stand fast in the faith; let all things be done with charity.

Vs 13-14 Stay true, and constantly care for the safety and salvation of all.
