NT Come Follow Me 40

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 40

Introduction:

“Walk in the Spirit”

Galatians 4:9 The gospel offers us freedom. But some turn back to their old ways and are then again in bondage to habits and sin.

Galatians 1:6  Make sure that you are accepting the gospel of Jesus Christ and not following after another one, that entraps and enslaves.

Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

Galatians 5:13 Accept the call to freedom! Love and serve one another.

Personal Study: The law of Christ makes me free.

Galatians 1:6-9 “ I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Don’t look to those who teach outside of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and never be found teaching another that is not the doctrine of Christ.

Galatians 2 Believers did not have to be circumcised to be disciples. It is not part of the doctrine of Christ for His Church.

Galatians 5:1 Paul referred to the teaching of circumcision and hanging on to the elements of the Mosaic law as a “yoke of bondage.”

What yokes of bondage are there for you today that may be keeping you back from experience true freedom? What can you do to align yourself more fully with the gospel of Jesus Christ, so that you can live in the simplicity of the gospel?

2 Nephi 2:27 We are free to choose liberty and life through Jesus Christ, or to choose captivity and death through Satan.

9:10–12 Through the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ we can all overcome both physical and spiritual death.

Personal Study: I am an heir to the blessings promised to Abraham.

Those who are baptized into the Church, into the waters of baptism or the waters of Judea, are adopted into the House of Israel, whether they were blood descendants or not. In our temple covenants, we are promised that we will receive all the blessings extended to Abraham (contingent upon our faithfulness).

Galatians 3:7–99, 13–14, 27–29 If we are baptized unto Jesus Christ, then we put on Jesus Christ and we are His. If we are His, then we are also the children of Abraham and heirs to all the promises. (In Abraham’s seed, all the nations of the world will be blessed.)

Abrahamic Covenant

  1. Posterity numerous
  2. His seed (or descendents) will have the gospel and the priesthood.
  3. Through His posterity, all the families of the earth will be blessed.

Through faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel, everyone can receive all the blessings of the Abrahamic Covenant.

Why are these blessings important to you?

Personal Study: Abraham had the gospel of Jesus Christ. Galatians 3:6–25

The Prophet Joseph Smith explained: “We cannot believe that the ancients in all ages were so ignorant of the system of heaven as many suppose, since all that were ever saved, were saved through the power of this great plan of redemption, as much so before the coming of Christ as since. … Abraham offered sacrifice, and notwithstanding this, had the Gospel preached to him” (The Elders of the Church in Kirtland to Their Brethren Abroad).

Why was it important for the early saints to know that Abraham knew the gospel of Jesus Christ? Why is important for you to know that?

Helaman 8:13–20 Moses spake of the coming of the Messiah. He raised up the brazen serpent in the wilderness as a type for Jesus Christ, Who salvation comes through. Abraham saw His coming and rejoiced in it. People before the time of Abraham also knew that Jesus Christ would come to save the world. Zenock, Zenock, Ezias, Isaiah, and Jeremiah.

Look at Later: See also Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (2007), 45–56.

Personal Study: If I “walk in the Spirit,” I will receive the “fruit of the Spirit.”

verses 22–23 Have you received, are you developing, and are you sharing the fruits of the Spirit?
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

How can you more fully cultivate these gifts in your interactions in serving and ministering?

Galatians 6:7–10 Choose to cultivate and develop the more important things. Keep you focus on Christ, in doing His well, and in serving and developing in the ways He would want you to do.

Alma 32:28, 41–43 Even good seeds need to be nourished to grow and develop into something better.

Doctrine and Covenants 64:32–34

32 But all things must come to pass in their time.

33 Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.

34 Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.

Family Study: Live By Faith

Galatians 3:11 What does it mean to live by faith? How are you going about doing this…on your own time, with your husband, with your family, with your friends?

Family Study: Children of a King

Galatians 4:1–7 As sons and daughters in our covenant with Jesus Christ, we are heirs also with Him to all that our Father has!

Family Study: Fruits of the Spirit

Galatians 5:16–26 Identify the fruits of the Spirit. Then mention someone you know who exhibits these fruits and how it makes you feel.

Family Study: It’s Not our Place to Call Each Other Out

Galatians 6:1–2 If someone is overtaking in a fault, we should lovingly help him or her and let them know how loved they are. We are to bear one another’s burdens.

Family Study: You’ll Reap What You Sow

Galatians 6:7–10 We mustn’t be deceived. We will never get a righteous reward for wickedness. Seek to do good to all men. Always live the first two great commandments.

If you plant lettuce, you won’t get an apple. How have you felt when you have planted vegetables or fruit and then got to harvest and eat them?

If you want to have eternal life, you must continue to follow Jesus Christ with faith in Him.
