NT Come Follow Me 43

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 43

Introduction:

“Perfect That Which Is Lacking in Your Faith”

Acts 17:6 Why might some still say that Christians are turning the world upside down?

Acts 17:1–10 How does the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ still cause an uproar among the ungodly?

1 Thessalonians 3:5–6 How is it still refreshing to those who preach and administer the gospel to find that converts are remaining faithful?

1 Thessalonians 1:7 Are you personally striving to be an example to all those who believe in Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 2:1 Paul found his work hadn’t been in vain. How can we remind ourselves that when we do the Lord’s work, it is never in vain?

2 Thessalonians 2:2–3 Many are still falling away. How can we help ensure our own spiritual safety and the safety of others?

1 Thessalonians 3:104:10 We must continually work on perfecting that which is lacking in our faith and to work on increasing our ability to love.

Personal Study: Disciples of Christ serve others with sincerity and love.

How can I as the Lord’s disciple better serve Him?

1 Thessalonians 1:5–8 I need to live worthily of having the Spirit to be with me, in my teaching, and as a safety to me in my daily walk.

2:1–13 I need to serve out of love. I should be striving to love others as my Father loves me, and desire their welfare in the same way that I do for my own children.

1 Thessalonians 1:7 Am I an example of the things I know?

How can I do better now?

Personal Study: “Increase and abound in love.”

1 Thessalonians 3:7–9 Heidi, you need to learn to find joy in your fellow Latter-day Saints. Think of them like unto yourself.

1 Thessalonians 4:1 How can I walk in the faith and please God more?

1 Thessalonians 4:10 How can I increase more spiritually?

1 Thessalonians 3:7–13 Stand fast in the Lord. Express gratitude to God always. Pray for God to direct your path and the paths of other saints. Seek to love others more fully. Establish your hearts, your affections, your convictions wholly with the Lord.

4:1–12 Are you seeking to please God in your daily walk, or do you just follow your own pursuits? Are you becoming sanctified, through faith, obedience, and repentance, allowing the Spirit to help you become more like the Lord? Are you loving your neighbor as yourself, and not speaking ill of anyone? Are you seeking to be holy?

Study to be quiet. What does that me for you? Don’t gossip. Don’t answer hastily. Speak more as moved upon by the Holy Ghost.

Holy Sacred, having a godly character, or spiritually and morally pure.

SanctificationThe process of becoming free from sin, pure, clean, and holy through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Sanctification cometh to those who yield their hearts unto God, Hel. 3:33–35.

Personal Study: If I am faithful and watchful, I will be prepared for the Savior’s Second Coming.

1 Thessalonians 5:1–10 Metaphors that teach about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

Record activities in this chapters reading.

What are you prompted to do to watch and prepare for the Savior’s coming?

Preparing for the Lord’s Return

Personal Study: An apostasy, or falling away from truth, was prophesied to precede the Second Coming.

2 Thessalonians 2:1–4 Paul knew that there would be an apostasy (and a restoration) before the Lord’s Second Coming.

(There definitely was an apostasy in the early church. Is there an apostasy going on in the Church today?)

Come back to the following review of the prophecies of the apostasy.

·        Scriptures that foretold the Apostasy: Isaiah 24:5Amos 8:11–12Matthew 24:4–142 Timothy 4:3–4

·        Scriptures that show the Apostasy was already beginning in Paul’s time: Acts 20:28–30Galatians 1:6–71 Timothy 1:5–7

·        Observations about the Great Apostasy by Christian reformers:

Martin Luther: “I have sought nothing beyond reforming the Church in conformity with the Holy Scriptures. … I simply say that Christianity has ceased to exist among those who should have preserved it” (in E. G. Schweibert, Luther and His Times: The Reformation from a New Perspective [1950], 590).

Roger Williams: “The apostasy … hath so far corrupted all that there can be no recovery out of that apostasy till Christ send forth new apostles to plant churches anew” (in Philip Schaff, The Creeds of Christendom [1877], 851).

Family Study: Jesus and His Apostles Show Great Love for the Saints

1 Thessalonians 3:9–13 How can I develop the love that I should have that will help the Lord to elevate those around me and myself? How can I be more demonstrative of Christ’s love through my own actions?

Family Study: Comforting Words Concerning the Resurrection

1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Either I will rise as a mortal in the air to meet Jesus and all His holy angels at His coming, or I will rise from the grave. Through Him, I will be resurrected. I look forward to Adam, trumpeters, and Jesus returning to bring to pass the resurrection of the dead.

Family Study: Choose a phrase to focus on

1 Thessalonians 5:14–25 There is great counsel from Paul in these verses for all Christians.

Family Study: Be not weary in well doing.

2 Thessalonians 3:13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

What can I do when I am feeling weary in well-doing? Where is my refreshment? (Turn to the Lord, not to chocolate.)

Galatians 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

There is not always immediate gratification in the life of a disciple. The very work suggests that we need to practice disciple and patience.

Doctrine and Covenants 64:33 Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.

We will not always see the results of our labors in this life. We need to practice Faith in Jesus Christ and rest assured that He keeps His promises.

How can I be supportive of others when they are feeling weary? What can I do when I feel this way myself?

The Saints are told to be holy, sanctify themselves, and love one another—The Lord will come, and the dead will rise.

Vs 4-7 Spiritual cleanness is intertwined with sexual purity. It is important to behalf well and to not take away anyone's virtue.

Vs 9-10 Love you brother as yourself, more and more. Increase in charity.

Vs 13-14 Those who are dead will rise again at Jesus's Coming.

Truths found in 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18

Vs 16-18 Let everyone know, the dead will rise. When Christ comes again, those who have had faith in Him will rise up to meet Him in the air.

At His Second Coming, the Lord Jesus will take vengeance upon the ungodly.

Truths found in 2 Thessalonians 1:4–10

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/2-thes/2?lang=eng

Apostasy is to precede the Second Coming—The gospel prepares men for eternal glory.

Vs 3-4 Again, I am no longer sure that this falling away had to do with the dark ages before the reformation and the beginnings of the restoration. I think there is a great falling away right now.

Satan, and the world, is exalting all things that are evil and wrong. We need to make sure we stay on the Lord's side and on the covenant path.

Vs 8 The brightness of the Coming of the Lord will reveal the great wickedness, and it will be stopped and destroyed.

Vs 10 It's imperative that we teach the truth and teach people to love the truth, that they may be saved.

Vs 15-17 Stand Fast in the truth and work righteousness. Find comfort in staying true to Jesus and your covenants with Him.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/2-thes/3?lang=eng

Pray for the triumph of the gospel cause—Paul preaches the gospel of work—Be not weary in well-doing.

Vs 1-3 Always pray for the safety of the missionaries and that the word of the Lord will move forward without obstruction; and pray that the saints will remain faithful.

Vs 4-5 Let's have confidence in one another, that we will remain faithful.

Vs 10 My Dad has always believed this. He said, "If I don't work, I don't eat. And I love to eat."

Vs 13 Ask for more faith to find joy in the work. Don't become weary with the jobs that you must do.

16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
