NT Come Follow Me 46

NT Come Follow Me Lesson 46

Introduction:

“An High Priest of Good Things to Come”

Hebrews 10:32–38 During troubles and trials, how can I practice patience and remain faithful in the Lord Jesus Christ? I need to make certain that I do not cast away my confidence. When it feels like the wind has been punched out of me, I need to remember that Jesus can fill my sails and help me to continue.

Hebrews 11 Paul exhorts the Jews to remember their long tradition of faithful believers and how they were blessed.

12:1 “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

Hebrews 12:2  “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 10:22, 38 Instead of drawing back, or withdrawing, when you feel overburdened with the cares and challenges of life, draw near unto Jesus, and He will draw near unto you and support you through all your challenges and trials (including major car problems, break ins, and attempted thefts.)

Hebrews 9:11 Jesus is our High Priest of good things to come!

Personal Study: The Melchizedek Priesthood points me to Jesus Christ.

The Melchizedek Priesthood was again established when Jesus set up His Church on the earth.

Hebrews 7 Teaches us about the Melchizedek Priesthood. This epistle helps us to build faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

JST, Hebrews 7:3, 21 Those who are ordained to the Melchizedek Priesthood “are made like unto the Son of God” and are “[priests] forever.”

Hebrews 7:11 The Levitical Priesthood does not offer “perfection” and was therefore superseded by the Melchizedek.

Doctrine and Covenants 84:18–22 The power of godliness is manifested.

This is especially true in the sealing powers in the temple.

Hebrews 7:20–21 The Melchizedek Priesthood is received through an “oath and covenant”.

Doctrine and Covenants 84:33–44 33 For whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods of which I have spoken, and the magnifying their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies.

Alma 13:1–13 I am thankful for the blessings of the Melchizedek Priesthood, that we can become Kings and Queens, Priest and Priestesses through faith in Jesus Christ and being obedient and righteous.

Doctrine and Covenants 121:36–46 36 That the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness.

Personal Study: Ancient and modern ordinances point to Jesus Christ.

The purpose of the ancient tabernacle and the ordinances Paul talked about were to point the people to Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice.

On the Day of Atonement, a high priest entered the Holy of Holies to offer sacrifice to atone for sins.

What ordinances do you participate in today that point you to Jesus Christ?

Videos: “The Tabernacle” and “Sacrifice and Sacrament”

Personal Study: Faith requires trusting in God’s promises.

Sister Anne C. Pingree’s definition of faith (in connection with Hebrews 11): “The spiritual ability to be persuaded of promises that are seen ‘afar off’ but that may not be attained in this life” (Seeing the Promises Afar Off).

Look for your own definition and examples of faith as you read.

Ether 12:6–22 “faith is things which are hoped for and not seen.” It is by faith that miracles are wrought.

Hebrews 11:13 What promises do you see afar off? Eternal Life through the atonement of Jesus Christ and the sealing ordinances and power of the Holy Temple.

Alma 32:21, 26–43 “if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.” Plant the seed, then water and nourish it.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jesus had joy in knowing that He was saving me and the others of God’s children and opening the doors of salvation and exaltation to all who work righteousness.

Jesus so that hope of Eternal Life for Himself and others. How can His example help me endure my own trials?

The Melchizedek Priesthood brings exaltation and administers the gospel—It is received with an oath and covenant—The superiority of the Melchizedek Priesthood over the Aaronic Priesthood is explained—Salvation comes through the intercession of Christ.

Vs 19 The Law of Moses didn't have the power to make anything perfect; but, it gave us the hope of the Coming of the Messiah and aided us in drawing nigh unto God. Jesus made it possible for us to draw nigh to our Father in Heaven through Him.

Vs 22, 24 Jesus fulfilled all the law of His Father and atoned for us. His is an unchangeable prieshood, and He continues forever.

25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Vs 26-28 We all needed a High Priest who was holy, harmless, and undefiled. He gave himself a sacrifice for our sins.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/heb/8?lang=eng

Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice for sin—God promised to make a new covenant with Israel.

Vs 1-2 Jesus is our Perfect High Priest.

Vs 6 Jesus restored the higher law and the higher priesthood. He has given us a more excellent way, being our Mediator with the Father, through covenants with Him.

Vs 8, 10-12 Make sure that you allow Jesus to put His laws into your mind and have them written on your heart. Have Him to be your God and become His people.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/heb/9lang=eng

The Mosaic ordinances prefigured Christ’s ministry—Christ is the Mediator of the new covenant.

Vs 2 The sanctuary of the tabernacle included, the candlestick, the table, and the shewbread.

Vs 3-5 The Holy of Holies was after the second veil; and it had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant, which held a golden pot with manna and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant. On the mercyseat were cherubims.

Vs 7 The high priest went into the Holy of Holies only once in a year to make a (blood) offering for himself and the people.

Vs 11-12 Jesus as our Perfect High Priest entered in once and for all into the holy place, and obtained eternal redemption for us.

Vs 14-18 Jesus's blood, since Jesus offered Himself as the Lamb without blemish in the eternal Spirit, can purge our consciences from dead works to serve the Living God.

He is the Mediator of the New Testament. He sealed His testimony with His blood. The New Testament is in force!

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/heb/10lang=eng

We are sanctified by the shedding of the blood of Christ—The superiority of His sacrifice is explained—Those who fall from grace through willful sin are damned—The just will live by faith.

Vs 7-10 Jesus came to do the will of the Father and to become the Lord's sacrifice for sin and death. "Lo, I come to do they will, O God."

Vs 12-14 Jesus offered Himself a sacrifice for our sins, and He now sits on the right hand of God. His enemies will be made his footstool. And through His offering, the sanctified will be perfected in Him forever.

Vs 15-18 We have the Holy Ghost as our Witness. The covenant is upon us and His law is being written in our hearts and minds. As we repent of our sins and keep our covenants, the Lord will remember our sins no more.

Vs 19-25 We have entered into the new and living way through baptism unto Jesus Christ's gospel. Let's hold fast the profession of our faith and support one another along the covenant path, especially as we see the Second Coming getting closer. Christians need one another.

Vs 28-30 Remember to pray for those who have lost their way, that they may repent and find mercy. The Lord will be the judge of all.

Vs 35-37 Keep your confidence and faith in the Lord. He will return, and His promises are sure.

Vs 38-39 Live by faith and do not draw back from the Spirit or even withdraw into yourself. If we believe, our souls will be saved.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/heb/11lang=eng

By faith we understand the word and work of God—The faith of the ancients was centered in Christ—By faith, men subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, and worked miracles.

Vs 1 Faith is the substance of things hoped for. And that hope is acknowledged by the Spirit which warms our souls and increases our faith. It is Faith in Jesus Christ and in our Heavenly Father's love that gives us hope and the assurance of the truths we feel, even though we cannot see it all yet.

Vs 3 Even God works through faith! He made a blueprint for our universe and created all things spiritually first and then physically.

Vs 6 We cannot please God if we don't believe in Him and come before Him with faith and diligently seek Him. Do better.

Vs 8 Like Abraham, Nephi also went forth, not knowing beforehand.

Vs 10 Are you looking for a city with foundations? Are you seeking to build up Zion? Are you allowing God to be your Builder and Maker?

Vs 11 Like Sarah, Lluvia also lived by faith and she was given a son!

Vs 13 We will not receive all the promises in this life, but we need to look forward to them and embrace them, by looking to God and having faith in His Son.

Vs 14-16 We will not receive all the promises in this life, but we need to look forward to them and embrace them, by looking to God and having faith in His Son.

Vs 25-26 Heidi, will you be like Moses? Will you choose to suffer afflication with the people of God, rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season?

Do you value the reproach of Jesus Christ as greater riches than the treasures of the world? He is the One that carries the promise of Eternal glory.

Vs 40
We need to live faithfully both for our ancestors and our descendants, and all our brothers and sisters throughout the world, and time and space.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/heb/12lang=eng

Whom the Lord loves He chastens—God is the Father of spirits—To see God, follow peace and holiness—Exalted Saints belong to the Church of the Firstborn.

Vs 1-2 We have so many witnesses! Paul mentioned some of them. Have faith in their testimonies and the testimony of the Spirit. Lay aside every weight...Jesus already carried your burdens; don't keep holding them and festering. Give up your sins. Run with patience the race you have. He will give you breath and strength.

Jesus is the Author and Finisher of your faith. Look to Him and live.

Vs 4
Jesus bled from every pore for you.

Vs 9-10 Trust in the Lord's chastening, and learn to be thankful for it. He wants to make you holy and ready for His presence.

Vs `14 Live peaceably and help others come unto the Lord. We need one another.

Vs 22-29 Be faithful and ready for the Lord's appearing and for the judgments that will follow.

https://site.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/heb/13lang=eng

Marriage is honorable—Christ is the same everlastingly—Paul explains how the Saints are to offer acceptable sacrifices.

Vs 1-3 Love everyone as yourself. Be good and kind and helpful.

Vs 5-6 Be content with what the Lord has given you and realize that His gifts to you are the best for you.

Vs 11-13 Some of the greatest sacrifices are made outside of the temple, by those who have made covenants within the temple. When you go forth to mingle with your fellow men, take the temple with you.

Vs 14-16 Be grateful, sing and praise, and look forward to Zion.

Vs 17-19 Pray for your spiritual leaders. They also need your faith and prayers in their behalf.

Vs 20-21 I say Amen to this prayer that Paul prayed for us. Make we believe in God's Son. May God make us perfect in every good work to do His will. May glory be to Them forever and ever.
