NT Come Follow Me 48
Introduction:
“Rejoice with Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory”
Doctrine and Covenants 76:80 Promptly record spiritual impressions, while you are yet in the Spirit.
John 21:18–19 Jesus told Peter, soon after He was resurrected, that Peter would be a martyr for Jesus Christ and His gospel.
2 Peter 1:14 Later Peter witnessed also that this would be so.
14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
1 Peter 1:6–7, 9 Peter didn’t fear His death, and He taught us to “greatly rejoice,” even though they were “in heaviness through manifold temptations” and to remember that “the trial of [our] faith” [will} lead to “praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” and to “the salvation of [our] souls.”
1 Peter 4:13 Am I a willing partaker “of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, [I] may be glad also with exceeding joy?”
Personal Study: I can find joy during times of trial and suffering.
The early Christians had major trials; so did the early Latter-day Saints. Can we expect to experience less?
1 Peter 1:6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations.
2:19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
4:12–13 12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
1 Peter 1:3–9 Keep blessing God for the hope of the resurrection He has given you! We are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. So we should rejoice in that great day, even if we suffer heaviness currently. If we endure well the trials of our faith, we will inherit what the Father has prepared for us.
2:19–24 Christ, who did no sin, set an example for us. We should not concern ourselves if we suffer wrongfully. All will be made right through Him. Seek Him. By his stripes, we are healed.
3:14–17 Be happy if you suffer for righteousness sake. Sanctify the Lord in your hearts, and always be ready to testify of Him to others.
4:12–19 It’s not strange for Christians to have fiery trials. Rejoice in the Lord when you have such. His glory will be revealed to you, and you will have gladness. Be happy to have the Spirit of the Lord with you as you trust in Him in your trials and weakness. He will be your every constant Guide and Stay. Don’t be ashamed if you suffer trials (at the hand of others) because you are being a good Christian. Just keep on keeping on.
When and how have you experience faith, hope, joy, and peace during great trials?
What is it about the plan of salvation and the gospel of Jesus Christ that gives you joy?
Finding Refuge from the Storms of Life
Personal Study: The gospel is preached to the dead so they can be judged justly.
1 Peter 4:5 One day, I will stand at the judgment bar to give an accounting to Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 3:18–20 Jesus also went to teach to the spirits in prison, so that they could learn the gospel and repent and follow Him if they so chose.
4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
Heavenly Father is fair, and Jesus is a fair judge. They are also merciful.
Personal Study: Through the power of Jesus Christ, I can develop my divine nature.
We all most grow line upon line, precept on precept.
“The attributes of the Savior … are interwoven characteristics, added one to another, which develop in us in interactive ways. In other words, we cannot obtain one Christlike characteristic without also obtaining and influencing others. As one characteristic becomes strong, so do many more” (Elder Hales, Becoming a Disciple of Our Lord Jesus Christ).
“Each Christlike quality we develop helps us weave a spiritual tapestry of discipleship.”
2 Peter 1:1–11 How are these attributes of divine nature interwoven and how do they build on each other? How do they help us become more Christlike? (look at notes in scripture reading)
2 Peter 1:4 How have you received great and precious promises in connection with your divine nature?
Exceeding Great and Precious Promises
Family Study: “Chief Corner Stone”
1 Peter 2:5–10 Peter taught that Jesus is the Chief Corner Stone. How are we lively stones? How are we a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation?
Family Study: Always be ready to share your testimony
1 Peter 3:8–17 Be ready to give an answer of your faith.
Family Study: Develop More Fully Your Connection to Your Ancestors
1 Peter 3:18–20 The gospel is being preached to those who have died. 4:6
What can your family do to feel connected to your ancestors?
Celebrate their birthdays; share their pictures and their history; do family history and do temple ordinance work for them. Ask ward or stake specialists for help.
Family Study: Peter was called as a prophet
2 Peter 1:16–21 Peter was an eye witness of the glory of God. He was there at the Mount of Transfiguration, when God the Father introduced Jesus Christ as His Beloved Son, in whom He is well-pleased. He received the more sure word of prophecy. (See also Matthew 17:1–9)
We can trust the words of the prophets.
Doctrine and Covenants 1:38 “What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.”
Why do you have confidence in today’s living prophet?

1 Peter 3:8–17 How can we “be ready always to give an answer” to those who ask us about our faith?
We need to remember that God is our Father, that Jesus is our Savior, and that each of us are brothers and sisters to one another. With that, we can express our faith in Jesus Christ and our Father’s love for us, and the desire that we have for all to gain Salvation and Exaltation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

2 Peter 1:1–11 How are these attributes of divine nature interwoven and how do they build on each other? How do they help us become more Christlike?
Vs 1 Have you and are you obtaining precious faith along with the other saints through the righteousness of God and Jesus Christ? You can trust in Them. Your faith should be in them and in Their promises.
Vs 2-3 Peter asks that grace and peace be mulitiplied unto us. This will talk faith on our part to develop a greater kownledge of Heavenly Father and Jesus as our Savior.
Know that He has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. He has called us to glory and virtue, and He knows how to make that happen.
We can trust in His exceedling great and precious promises. As we become partakers of the divine nature, we can escape the corruption and lust of this world.
Vs 5-7 What else must we do besides grow in knowledge? We must give all diligence to the knowledge that we have and add virtue to our faith, and to virtue more knowledge. We need to live and practice what we believe!
Then again, add temperance to our knowledge, and then patience to temperance, and then godliness to patientce; then brotherly kindness to godliness, and charity to brotherly kindness.
It doesn't stop. It is through the grace of Jesus Christ that we can become perfect. But we must remember that practice makes perfect. We cannot stop.
Vs 8 Living by these principles will in trun increase our knowledge of Jesus Christ.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Vs 10-11 We cannot stop. This is our admission ticket into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior. We must continue in faith of Him and grow in knowledge of Him, and be striving to become like Him in order to gain Eternal Life.
Vs 12-15 This is why it is important for us to hear the same messages over and over concerning the gospel and doctrine of Jesus Christ. We must keep these things in rememberance.
As one who should testify of Him, I need to realize also that my time is short in aiding others to come to Christ, and learn not to hesitate.
We must trust the words of the apostles and prophets who were eye witnesses to God's glory and the resurrected Christ. They have given us knowledge through the Holy Ghost, and we should also receive the same through the power of the Spirit.

False teachers among the Saints are damned—Lustful Saints will perish in their own corruption.
Vs 9 Be righteous, and the Lord will deliver you. Don't worry about justice so much in the hear and now. The Lord's got all this.

Some in the latter days will doubt the Second Coming—The elements will melt at the coming of the Lord.
V s 3-5 Peter warns of the scoffers and willful disbelievers of the last days, who stir up trouble of things they choose to know nothing about.
8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
Vs 9 The Lord's promises are sure; but, for now He's giving us time to repent and get it right.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God,
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Vs 14-15 We have the testimony of both Paul and Peter that we should live in peace and become blameless and without spot, through Jesus Christ, as we diligently live as His disciples and await His Coming.
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
